I am the designated doughnut lady this Friday at the office. Looking on GoogleMaps, all that comes up is Dunkin' this and Dunkin' that. Are there any places with tasty doughnuts/breakfast pastries around Niles/Lincolnwood/Morton Grove/Skokie? I can't deviate too far from this route as I find it hard enough to show up on time as it is.

Any thoughts? I have had the stuff from Forest View bakery and was unimpressed.

Of course! And they have sufganiot, which I never had before. Thanks!

I can't really speak about the donuts, but the bakery section at the Super Tony's in Niles is fantastic.

Kaufman's did not have a single doughnut. Thus I am still ignorant to what sufganiot is like or how to pronounce it.

However, they did have danish the size of dinner plates and bear claws that were possibly traced with the help of an actual bear, they were so huge. They will likely please my coworkers.

@ Shop & Save in Niles they have some nice Polish Doughnuts (Paczki) in bakery dept. As well they have as a tasty poppy seed version of hamantaschen.

Also there is a polish bakery on Milwaukee, Oak Mill Bakery which should have doughnuts as well...

A jelly doughnut and just like it's spelled: soof-gah-ni-yoht.

    Hope this helps,

Actually, one would be a sufganiyah. Sufganiyot is plural, and is the more common spelling (although it's a transliteration of the Hebrew so you can spell it in English however you want). One sufganiyah, or several sufganiyot.

I've never seen them at Kaufman's, not even in my several visits since they re-opened (even though I've seen some other baked goods recently that they never had before). Maybe they only had them during Hannukah, but I didn't see them then either. (They are supposedly traditional for Hannukah, but if so, they're not all that well known.)

You also won't find donuts at Sweetie Pie's, although they have croissants and cupcakes as well as pies. Or, they will when they get back from vacation.

Bennison's is in Evanston, so it's not precisely in the towns mentioned, but close by. Their donuts are quite good. Some of their more unusual donuts include "long johns" with a strip of bacon on top, and also flavored cake donuts, including pumpkin donuts and red velvet donuts.

Delightful Pastries is on Lawrence just south of Niles, and they too usually have pączki. (Pączki is plural, pączek is the singular; one pączek, or several pączki.)

They are on their menu via the website, but perhaps it's a future item.

This week's episode of WBEZ's Curious City is about the lack of non-Dunkin spots around town.
