Post #3 - February 21st, 2009, 8:24 pmWell, you might as well try the local tradition Springfield Cashew Chicken. I've had it on trips through town, but can't recommend any place in particular—it's been too long. However, there's a fairly thorough discussion on Chowhound. Understand that here we're entering the land of legend and fable, with an icon as meaningful to the locals as Italian Beef is to Chicagolanders.

Post #4 - February 22nd, 2009, 10:55 amSpringfield, MO is actually on the great Mother Road, route 66!
You might also try some Route 66 sites.
Some places that were recommended to us when we did our Route 66 trip were:
Aunt Martha’s Pancake House is an institution, right off of Glenstone
(recommended numerous times to us, but we didn't end up eating in Springfield at all, got in too late, etc.)
There is also a Lamberts-Home of Throwed rolls in Springfield.(waits can be long)
On the way to Springfield:
Richland, Missouri - Caveman Bar-BQ & Steak House
inside a cave 50 feet above the road. It is in an old resort.

This place sounded intriguing, but in researching it, I saw mixed reviews - It is also CASH ONLY-another good website for researching more causal joints to eat is roadfood.com"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home."

Post #5 - December 21st, 2015, 9:18 amSuper old thread, but had a meal just outside of Springfield this weekend that was worthy of a mention. Chef Craig von Foerster has opened a restaurant in Rogersville, amidst a fruit farm (Sunshine Valley Farms). All products are locally sourced where possible, though items such as Nantucket Bay scallops do find their way to the menu (and that is a good thing, as they were delicious). I loved the pickled fennel that came with the cheese board, and the chestnut soup, something I've never had, was addictive. But that lamb - oh, that lamb - I just want to eat that forever.
Since moving from Chicago, I've been relatively depressed with the options available in Springfield, especially when looking for anything resembling fine dining. Harvest has, after one visit, solidified itself in my regular rotation of restaurants. Now, if only I could find a Sichuan restaurant...Menu

Nearest Sichuan is most likely in Kansas City metro. Sat/Sun brunch buffet at China Tom's in KC KS is totally Sichuan, an incredible surprise, actually. A most definite go to.
