Thinking ahead about my dessert and was thinking of perhaps a "love" theme as it is the week after Valentine's Day. Came across a recipe for "Blood Orange Loaf Cake." Not really love inspired, but it inspired me.

it's interesting that valentines day is associated with the color red. red makes me think of blood, not love.....so your cake sounds perfect.

    Hi,

If somebody has not decided on what to make, may I make a suggestion?

    Baked Chocolate Mousse

This recipe from Serious Eats is a kissing cousin to the Rose Levy Beranbaum recipe I plan to make. It would be very interesting to try these two approaches side-by-side.

Thank you to JustJoan for hosting a lovely dessert exchange. I've been wanting to try kugel and Joan's savory kugel was worth waiting for. There seemed to be a bit of a chocolate theme this month, but nothing wrong with that. Photos below:

A note on making this torte. I thought I had bittersweet chocolate at home already. When I went to make it, I had unsweetened chocolate. I found online a reliable substitute of 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate to 1 tablespoon sugar (I also saw 2 teaspoons, for those who prefer less sweet).

I used my digital scale to measure one pound: I added initially 9 ounces unsweetened chocolate, then measured out 9 tablespoons sugar. I was still short of one pound, I believe I added one more ounce of unsweetened chocolate and enough sugar to reach a pound.

I received enough good feedback to know this substitution had no ill affect on the torte's outcome.

    Regards,
    Cathy2
