I'm kinda surprised there hasn't been a thread about them, so I thought I'd start one.

The girl & I have been enjoying Tacos Tequilas as our go to NW side taco/casual Mexican place since discovering it about a year and a half ago. They have all the hallmarks of a GNR: great prices, great hours, friendly staff, and wonderful food. Being just north of Belmont Cragin, I'd figure I'd be swimming in good taco joints, but it doesn't seem to be so. Outside of the more upscale Sol de Mexico and the more group friendly Mom's Old Recipe, I had hoped there would be more options.

Anyway, the central piece for Tacos Tequilas for me are their tacos. Meticulously prepared, they have a great assortment. I think their al pastor tacos are very good, and the cochinita pibil and carne asada are both flavorful, juicy, and delicious.

Up until recently, they had even had an amazing mango cheesecake on their dessert menu, but it sounds like it will only be a seasonal offering going forward.

They have apparently gotten the attention of Groupon, so when we tried to go a few weeks back, they were unusually slammed for a section of south Avondale. I'd love for more of the taco-skilled of our board to head over and give their opinions, but I consider it one of the best, if not the best, taco on the NW side. And while it doesn't beat anything like La Chapparita, I wouldn't think it out of place to see their tacos in a contest against them.

I'll have to get some pictures the next time I'm there.

It is surprising not to see a post on them until now. While I haven't been in about 4 months I have been in a handful of times and always enjoy the place. As you said it's the tacos that stand out. Though the only other thing I've tried is the tamale which is also worth ordering. I can always appreciate a place that has taco options different than the norm. The menu boasts selections such as a Choriqueso, Chicken Mole, Crispy Potato, Cochinita Pibil etc. I'm fond of the Cochinita Pibil and the Crispy Potato with Epazote but also enjoyed most others. I wasn't in love with their Carne Asada when I tried that. The house salsa that comes with the gratis chips is a stepped up example of the classic tomato, onion, cilantro mix. I think it's a good option for any 'hood to have.

The Papa y Epazote/Crispy Potato taco represents the Ideal food texture to me - crispy on the outside, buttery smooth inside.

I wanted their tamales to be so much better than they were. Although I guess it's my fault for ordering tamales late at night at a restaurant- they can't possibly be making them fresh. Both of the salads (jicama, nopales) were great.

Place is OK. I was hoping it would be better though since I live very close. The Cochinita Pibil with the pickled red onions is nice. Al Pastor and steak (Arrachera) are very average, especially considering the exceptional La Patron isn't that far away. The Cactus (Nopales) should be much better. The crispy papa y Epazote is decent though.

The portions are very small, especially for the price. Groupon deal with the margarita's and side of guac is a good deal however. Not a bad spot, just not the go to spot I was hoping it would be.
