I had a great meal at Kawayan in Jefferson Park last night. At least I think it was great. I couldn't be much more ignorant of Filipino cuisine so hopefully more knowledgeable folks than me will be motivated to check this place out and report back.
Located next to a 7-Eleven and across from a Dunkin Donuts in a strip mall steps from the Jefferson Park Transit Center, Kawayan is an entirely nondescript restaurant that's been open since June 2014.
We tried a number of items, all of which were good, but the real standouts were Kaldereta, described on the menu as a Spanish style tomato stew sautéed with beef, bits of liver, peppers, spices, potatoes, and hot dogs, and Daing na Bangus, a whole butterflied milkfish that was deep fried and served with garlic vinegar. I have no baseline to judge either of these against so perhaps there are better versions somewhere else, but I'd be happy to go back to Kawayan tonight and eat them both again.
