We're hosting a memorial service for my grandmother in 2 weeks and will have lots of passed appetizers, etc. For dessert, my mother's vision is lots of bite-sized pastries. She loves the idea of things like lemon tarts, morning buns, mini eclairs, etc. Her original idea was Bonjour Bakery in Hyde Park but my attempts at calling them (and the reviews I've seen online) lead me to believe that it's not the best option.

Where do you recommend going for the best pastries and dessert options that works well in smaller sizes? We're in the far south suburbs but the event will be in the South Loop. I'm willing to travel but would prefer not to head too far north, just for the sake of logistics. I'm also willing to consider ordering from 2 places if the logistics aren't awful.

    Ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help! (a frequent lurker, rare poster)

Might be too far north for you, but I'm sure Dobra (an LTH regular), at Delightful Pastries, could be a very good resource.

I am sorry for your loss.
Two that come in mind for your geography are Wolf's and Weber's.

    So sorry for your loss.
Lovely is good for minis, but is 1130 N. Milwaukee too far north?
Also, there's a Vanille in the Ogilvie station.
Have you tried Sugarloaf? They deliver, if that's an option. http://www.sugarloafcake.com/menu--pricing-guide.html

    Agreed.

I have actually gotten just such an assortment beautifully displayed for a friend's mum's wake.

A bit out of the way, and maybe beyond their capacities, but Cellar Door would probably do an excellent job with such a special request (given sufficient advance notice). Floriole is also a not too far away choice, but I would certainly call well in advance again.

They're also at the French Market downtown.
