A Nashville Hot Chicken place in HP? Well, they somehow struck gold with the "sauce on everything is real BBQ" lovers around here with Real Urban BBQ, so why not more sauce on something else? Funny that they say it's the same ownership as Real Urban BBQ in Oakbrook. It's the same ownership as the original RUB location which is in Highland Park.

They also have a website address of honeyshotchicken.com (which looks like "honey shot chicken" :) ) although it looks like they have yet to put stuff like their menu on it.

Earl's BBQ is now open in Jefferson Park. Drive through BBQ with homemade doughnuts. I'll be trying it tonight and will probably start a thread.

I find it strange that they mention Oak Brook when the original Real Urban is right in Highland Park. Speaking of which, we now have another reason to hate on Real Urban. Their web site lists the locations as Highland "Pork", Vernon "Hogs" and "Smoke" Brook. The last is clever but the other two are appetite destroyers.

While it's not official yet, it's not exactly a secret either that M Pub, formerly Mirabell, has found a buyer and its days are numbered. I don't think I'm at liberty yet to say who the buyer is, but he's an executive chef from a fairly prominent downtown-area steakhouse who plans to convert it into a sort of Italian steakhouse. Hopefully they can swipe some business away from Olive Garden, whose lot is distressingly full on any given night.

Yeah, the hours were weird because they weren't getting any business on weekdays and they've been trying to minimize their losses until they found a buyer while still nominally keeping it a going concern. Plus the owner found a buyer for his house too, so it's on to greener pastures altogether.

Another 24/7 stalwart bites the dust. Whistler's, at 3420 W. Devon is no more. It never was all that special, but in their final days, they had started to carry Old Fashioned Donuts apple fritters. For that reason alone, I'll miss them.

Pretty much. :) Actually, I was only able to get one fritter before the doors closed. I went there today to verify the details and I found that sign on the door. I'd gladly buy up any "extra inventory".

Due to your blabbing about the fritters I was forced to walk over to Bennison's bakery . I got a glazed croissant, which I have never had before and so help me, except for no apples, I'd rather have it than an Old Fashioned Fritter. Light but creamy/buttery with a delicate crisp crust and a perfect glaze that says "I am sweet, but that's not all I am".

Bennison's also has their own apple fritters. They're not as heavy and sweet as the ones at OFD, and they don't have much apple in them. But considered on their own, for what they are and without comparing to any "standard" recipe type, they're a decent donut. In fact, most of the donuts at Bennison's are pretty darn good.

I've been there twice, at 3:30 last Thursday and 1:00 yesterday. The shakes are very good, made with real ice cream. The salmon I had yesterday was just a little fishy but was very well cooked, mostly seasoned well with no smokiness and priced well. I would go a little out of my way for those two.

The other dishes I tried, most twice, were not great and were inconsistent enough to preclude comment.

The line moved quickly but it took 15 to 20 minutes to get the food after placing the orders. They are not yet set up for the drive through and if I were king, at this time I would only open it for shakes, ice cream, donuts and (unbranded) drinks.

Not surprisingly, a work in progress.

I went to Earl's BBQ for lunch yesterday and I had the rib tips and 1 donut for a total price with tax of $10.93 ($8.95 tips meal + $0.95 donut + tax) which I thought was very reasonable price point for BBQ. There was a constant line of people coming in which is a good sign for there business.

The Rib tips come with cole slaw and 1 side (I chose fries) and were pretty generous with the amount of food given for the price point ($8.95 for rib tips meal). The rib tips had nice bark on them but not as much smoke as i would have liked. The fresh cut fries with skin on were great compared to the frozen fries used at places like Honey 1 and the cole slaw was very good as well. The donut was more like a Churro in which it was crispy sweet and not like cakey like other donuts most of us had.
