    Hi,

I would contact Bent Fork Bakery in Highwood, who actually bake on the premises.

My extended family likes them. I don't know much about their buttercream, you will have to ask.

What I cannot recommend is Deerfield Bakery.

    Regards,

I agree that Bent Fork is the best in the area. Their hours -- or lack thereof -- are annoying but they do put out good product. I also agree that Deerfield's is to be avoided at all costs. They used to be decent, maybe a couple of decades back, but it seems their goals of expansion have diminished their quality significantly.

My absolute favorite bakery in the area is Froggy's. Their carry-out store, next door to the French restaurant, has a complete range of cakes, as you can see on their website. The quality is awesome - including real buttercream. They sell complete cakes as well as individual slices, in case you would like to try some in advance of ordering a full cake.

Two other high-quality nearby bakeries I like are Three Tarts in Northfield, and Gerhard's in Lake Forest. But since you're looking for real buttercream, my top recommendation is Froggy's, all the way.

(And I'll second - no, third - the advice to avoid Deerfield Bakery.)

    Hi,

Sorry, I did not think of Froggy's.

Both Gerhard's and Gourmet Frog lean toward European-style cakes.

Also, Froggy's and Bent Fork are right across the tracks (around the block, if you will) from each other, so it's easy to check out both of them to help in your decision.

We get a Yule Log from Froggy's every year and they're always delicious and beautiful. It's a very different, less homespun type of bakery than Bent Fork but also really great at what they do.

I would even check out Costco in Mettawa to see what options they provide.

Why no love for Deerfield's? Don't you folks like overpriced product that always tastes four days old?

I did it thanks to all of you. :) Went to Froggy's and got one. Their cakes are three layer Genoise cakes and they don't do buttercream, but I was convinced that it was going to be good otherwise. :)

I pick up the cake on Monday but since the bakery isn't open on Monday I have to pick it up next door.

I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

I was wondering what you meant by this remark about Bent Fork. Today I went there to check out their products, as I had never been there before. There was a sign taped on the door that they are on vacation July 3-12, even though there is no such notice on their website. So I found out what you meant. I guess they're the bakery version of Schwa - they might be open when you go there, but they might not.

As it turns out, Bent Fork would never have been a contender for the OP.

Here's a link to two rather messy pictures of the cake. Genoise cake and mousse filling. They're really nice over there and had us call when we got to the restaurant and then sent a guy over to get the cake. This cake was about $45 and we got 16 slices out of it. I totally recommend them.

Not really sure, but it's a basic sponge with a mousse filling. I think you can choose the type of sponge flavor, chocolate or otherwise, and various mousse and fruit fillings.
