Chicago magazine "Best of" Issue 2016

Some perhaps interesting results:

"Best Cheap Burger": Double cheeseburger at Johnny's Grill ($9, btw)

"Best Fried Chicken" (reader poll): Honey Butter is the leader, with 14% of reader votes, Popeyes second with 11%. "Other" got a whopping 44%, i.e. "best fried chicken" is a very personal thing.

"Best New Bakery": Loba.

"Best Doughnuts" (reader poll): Stan's in the lead with 22% despite being kinda slammed on LTHF. Second place went to Glazed and Infused, 11% (barely edging out DD's 10%).

"Best Poke": Oyster Bah.

"Best Hot Dog" (reader poll): Portillo's 23% was well ahead of other individual names, but 58% of voters went for "Other". Like with fried chicken, but more so.

"Best Ramen": yuzu shio at Kizuki Ramen/Izakaya.

I've definitely thought, "This is the worst donut ever," and thrown away the rest.

A good portion of Chicago Magazine's readership is suburbanites whose only access to donuts IS Dunkin' Donuts.

They may not know diddly about poke and ramen, so they probably don't cast votes in those categories. This also explains why Portillo's is the single biggest vote getter in the hot dog category.

A good portion of Chicago Magazine's readership is suburbanites whose only access to donuts IS Dunkin' Donuts.

I can understand Stan's, which is actually quite good even if it doesn't compare to the ones from the original LA locations (I wouldn't know).

Glazed and Infused is outright bad - worse than Dunkin' in my opinion. Every now and again, I get tempted by their Fulton Market location, and every time I'm disappointed. They're just 'fancy' without actually being good - they're overly sweetened to the point where you can't taste anything but the sugar, and the texture is poor.

A pretty broad brush we're painting with - I guess city residency comes with an innate knowledge of food.

The majority of posters on this forum, including some of the"founders/owners" live in the 'north shore." Time to put that argument to rest, people in the "country" can type on the internet about "good food" too, whether or not you "city folk" agree. Turns out people have opinions no matter where they live, & nowadays they all have the internet, wow what a concept!

Is that actually true? I've been under the impression that most LTHers live in the city, with a smaller contingent on the North Shore, and various other suburbs. Come to think of it, it would be interesting to know, for no more pressing reason than idle curiosity.

I think all areas and directions from the city are pretty well represented on LTH. Are there more in the city? Maybe. I don't think it really matters, as the people posting here are willing to travel and seek out establishments from all over the area. As for the demographic of the Chicago magazine poll, who knows.

“Curry shoff” is a guy who emailed tips earlier today asking if he could write about why Papa John’s is the best pizza in Chicago. We said yes.

I think Gawker, which was sold and is about to lose its independence due to all manner of legal shenanigans, has just been goofing around this last week, its "senior week."
