Chicago Foodways Roundtable presents
Contemporary Homesteading and Community Building:
Community Gardens and Food SwappingPresented by
LaManda Joy,
Founder of Peterson Gardens and author of
Start A Community Gardenand
Emily Paster,
Founder of Chicago Swap and author of
Food Swap This program will feature two speakers, who each define an element of back-to-basics home-centric lifestyles.
When we first encountered LaManda Joy in 2010, she was discussing “Chicago Victory Gardens: Yesterday and Tomorrow” reflecting an increased interest in vegetable gardening not seen in this country since World War II. The very next day, LaManda visited her Alderman hoping to revive a Victory Garden located on Petersen Avenue. This small step has blossomed into an educational not-for-profit with books, educational programming, six Pop-up Victory garden locations and a community cooking school.
LaManda Joy’s talk will highlight what she learned starting this community food gardening adventure from the ground up.
Next up will be Emily Paster — co-founder of the Chicago Food Swap, one of the biggest in the world — who offers her experience on setting up a food swap as well as inspiring stories from people who are part of this growing movement.
Books will be available for sale and signing.
