The next dessert exchange will be Sunday, October 9th at my place in Old Town(what was formerly deemed Cabrini-Green) at 4pm. My place is 3 blocks from the Sedgwick stop on the brown line.

There is street parking. It will be permit parking at 6 pm, but I will provide a permit for anyone who wants to drive.

We have an active dog who will probably stay as close to me as she can.

A baker's dozen is the limit for participants.

Here is the basic format for the dessert exchange:

    1) I’ll serve a light vegetarian dinner
    2) Bring one recipe size of any dessert – no doubling or tripling of recipes needed!
    3) Bring a container to transport your dessert assortment home. (Or two, one for refrigerated desserts and one for non-refrigerated desserts.)
    4) Come hungry. You probably won’t want to eat another dessert afterwards for another month.

Feel free to make whatever you like. (Although in the past, some participants have been vegetarians and/or those who don't drink alcohol, just advise if your dessert includes those ingredients)

    1) kalamazoogirl- Buttermilk blueberry pie bars
    2) ONJ4ever- TBD
    3) Pie Lady
    4) Cathy2- Something from State Fair
    5) ParumMorsus-TBD
    6) Izaglu- Something Eastern European with poppyseed
    7) izzy2- Something with chocolate as a major ingredient
8)justjoan-Fruit hand pies (apple or maybe peach)
    9) suef-HMP perhaps
    10) LauraS
    11) Cookie Monster
    12)

I just spoke with Cookie Monster and she said she wants to come,

but her computer is having issues. (hence I am posting on her behalf)
While I would love to see everyone, I am still in catch-up mode from being overseas, plus my son will be in from college this week-end.
I'll try hard for the next one,
or the cookie exchange for sure.

Hiya. I recently bought three kinds of cinnamon because I have an addiction to buying spices. I can't taste the differences. A friend of me schooled me on how to taste 'em...I can print that out, if you're interested. It's a really well-written chunk of smarts.

Anyway, I was thinking of baking some sort of cinnamon butter cookie/shortbread, dividing the dough, and mixing in a different variety in each. Then we can sample and compare. And maybe I can see what all the fuss is about. ;)

    Hi bakers,
I just want to say thank you for welcoming me so warmly to my first dessert exchange. I had a great time AND, am still thinking about Ava's yummy soup and cornbread. Thanks for sharing those recipes with me.
Ava asked me to post the recipe for the BLUEBERRY BUTTERMILK PIE BARS from Dorie Greenspan. They are even tastier when the blueberries are at their sweet peak!
    Enjoy! Celia

    Hi!

These cookies are very delicate coming out of the oven. They really do need to rest a few minutes before lifting them.

I made a half batch yielding about 3.5 dozen cookies. I think the yield suggested in the recipe is due to smaller portions. I liken it to the brownie recipe in the Joy of Cooking. The recipe remained the same through out the years, but the yield was smaller as the portion increased over subsequent editions.

Those present recognized it as an old style sugar cookie. CookieMonster suggested added grated lemon peel to transform it into a lemon cookie.

    Thanks for asking!

    Regards,
    CAthy2

Mine came from The American Woman's Cook Book, 1964. Edited by Ruth Berolzheimer, Director of the Culinary Arts Institute:

    Rich Cinnamon Cookies
Combine: 2 cups sifted cake flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and 1/4 tsp salt.

Cream: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup softened butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Add sifted ingredients alternately with 2 beaten eggs. Mold with cookie press on cold ungreased baking sheet. Bake in hot oven (400F) 10 minutes. Makes 3 dozen.

But...I changed things slightly since I halved the recipe to make three different kinds. After the creaming, I tossed in the egg and beat it in until I had batter. Then I added the flour and stirred it up. I did all this by hand, like I did when I was wee!
I used parchment on the pans, and it was way too soft to use the press without refrigerating the dough. I used a scoop, but I couldn't tell you which size. They took 8 minutes, not 10. Not even 9, as you'll see if you got one of the Vietnamese ones at the bottom of the tin.
