I just returned a couple of weeks ago from Singapore -- just an amazing city if you love food. I've never felt as strongly anywhere else. You'll find a number of blogs that discuss favorite hawker stalls in Singapore . . . and the information overload can get overwhelming, with various blogs preferring different stalls, and especially with Michelin now jumping into the fray.
But once you arrive at any particular hawker market, finding something great to eat is pretty easy. There may be 100 stalls (and perhaps on two floors) but some will have longer lines of locals so that will tell you what is most appreciated (not necessarily indicative as I had some incredible food from stalls with no lines). At any particular hawker center, you may find a couple of stalls selling laksa or chicken rice, etc. Luckily, the food is ridiculously cheap so you can do plenty of sampling.
And make sure to visit different hawker centers, especially the one in Little India. Also, bring your own napkins (or packs of tissues as is the custom in Singapore) since almost none of the stalls provide any. You'll see packs of tissues on seats which means someone has reserved the seat.
Though the hawker stalls were amazing (did a different one each of my five days in Singapore), the city also offers many amazing restaurants outside of the hawker stalls and the intense heat & humidity will very likely have you seeking one or more out. We're talking "feels like" temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees every day of my visit and there's no such thing as an air conditioned hawker stall.
Odette in particular was one of the five best meals I've ever eaten, Sushi Jin prepared some very respectable nigiri, and don't forget to seek out either chili crab or pepper crab (bbq stingray too!).
