Hello all- I am probably leaving this a bit late, but wanted to make some fruit mince pies for xmas.
Anyone know where I can find packets of dried fruit and peel for this purpose?
I'm from Australia, typically you can buy a mix of sultanas, raisins, currants, and dried mixed peel, with our without glace/imitation cherries. I looked on Amazon but the mixes there are too fancy- having apples, dried pineapple and other unnecessary extras. I also thought of world market, but doesn't look like they have it either..
    Any help gratefully accepted!

I don't think you'll find all that combined in a mix. You can obviously find sultanas/raisins/currants in separate packages as well as candied peel (also separate). Or you can bite the bullet and order the Australian product from Amazon:

I saw that one, but it's outrageously expensive, and will arrive mid January! :)

It says between 12/8 and 12/13 for me. By the time you get the separate packages of everything you need you'll easily spend $25, this just saves the aggravation.

I'd check with Spice House for the peels--I'm almost positive I've seen them there. The rest you can get at any store that sells dried fruit in bulk--Whole Foods would be my first option.

    Hi,

You didn't ask, though you may need it: grated suet.

Galway Bakers has offered, and may still do, grated suet suitable for plum puddings (and mincemeat).

Dried peel you could make yourself: peal and cut into the shape you want, then leave it alone and let nature dry it for you.

I make candied peel, is that what you refer to as dried?

I have gotten nice dried fruits at Treasure Island in their "own package" section (not sure if they have glacee - didn't look for that). Candied ginger, orange peel, very soft figs, etc.

I'm not sure if you saw it already, but None Such Mincemeat is the most common US brand of readymade filling for mince pies. It should be available in the baking aisle of most supermarkets in Chicago. I'm not sure how close it is to most Australian versions, but None Such must be fairly similar to Sunbeam (though None Such has no cherries).

Try Fresh Farms in Niles or a Pete's.

I saw orange and lemon peel at Fresh Farms last weekend, and also see it often at the Middle East Bakery, which also carries a variety of dried fruits.

(Also candied ginger at Fresh Farms - it used to be by the Indian groceries, but just migrated over to where all the other dried fruits, nuts, etc. are, between the fish counter and the cheese section.)
