I was driving down Archer yesterday just south of 31st and saw a funny looking joint called Veteran Tamales, with a neon tamale and a big neon American Flag. Anyone ever been?

Since they tore down the Ashland viaduct, the once-hidden Veteran Tamale Shop is much more obvious. Here’s a link to an old Chowhound post on Veteran. To summarize, it’s a cool old place but the tamales are nothing special (even in the world of Chicago corn roll tamales).

"The wrapper has some helpful serving instructions. 'Remove wrapper and serve with crackers.' Conveniently, Veteran sells oyster crackers though I suspect they’d go better with the tamale than the wrapper."

Given all you've said about the tamales, though, that's not a certainty, is it?

I laughed the first time I read that line, and I'm still laughing.

If you've ever had a Tom-Tom tamale then you've had a Veteran tamale. Same taste, same texture.

Well, not exactly but they are surprisingly close. Tom Tom (and Supreme) tamales contain beef (though I’d prefer not to think about what sort) while Veteran’s is meat free. The “meaty center” is composed of cleverly colored soy.

PantherInTheDen commented on facebook that Veteran Tamales is closing at the end of January, 2017.

I will guess he saw Dave148's link to this article.

A place I pass and never walked into.

Actually they are labeled Chili Corn Roll and the chili powder flavor is stronger than the other two.

From what I understand the corn roll tamale is another Chicago product.
