Finn McCool's moved into a spot on River Road which has had several failed tavern-like concepts (and not too long ago a fair-to-middling BBQ place). I hadn't realized they had other outposts in Schaumburg and Crystal Lake until I searched here (only mentions here and there).

And they make a darn good burger. 3 toppings for $9.50 with a side. I chose bacon jam, Merkt's cheese and onion rings. It's a single half-pound patty but arrived looking like it had griddled crispy edges. Beefy, and the bacon and cheese worked perfectly (the onion rings were large and awkward -- I'd have preferred strings, but as it is, there's a lot of onion in the jam).

The sign on the wall says everything is from scratch, but I'm doubtful about their tater tots, which were crisp, standard foodservice items... although nearby North Branch does have a house-made tot that's pretty darn good.

The drinks menu has several ciders including Magners, so overall I'm likely to be back (wasn't drinking last night, I was driving).

When the Finn McCool's in Crystal Lake first opened six or seven years, they had pretty good hamburgers. We used to head down there a few times a month after work. The place was crowded every night.

However, over time, the food declined and the service declined ... and better places opened.

The last time that I was in there after work in 2013, I was nearly alone ... and still did not have good service or food.

There are many up in Wisconsin, but one of my favorites that I drove by years ago in Racine was called "Aw, Come on Inn." It was on a Pabst sign hanging from the front. Don't think it is around anymore.

Indeed. A true giant of Irish mythology and literature.
