Captain Porky's and The Shanty are great. My niece lives 1/2 mile away and I have been there often. Unfortunately, I will be in North Carolina on the 24th.

Top-notch jumbo fried shrimp. Great fried blue gill. The last vestiges of a regime gone awry. I plan to be there to observe the potential carnage.

I just started a new job, so I don't think I can spare the time.
Ask Dino what's available for the fryer: hen of the woods mushrooms occasionally, homemade goat cheese sometimes... all awesome. He likes to push the gumbos and stews, but I'm more interested in the smoked and fried stuff.

Would a note to your new employer from The Esteemed Coordinator help?

    Hi,

It won't be Hen of the Woods until late August, though I do agree they are fine eating!

Pretty much I still to seafood and greens there.

    Regards,

The parade of fried food was fabulous:

    Smelt
    Jumbo Shrimp
    Blue Gill
Lake Perch, yes, it was yellow perch
Clam strips, which reminded us of Howard Johnson

Because we are not just about fried food:

Braised lamb in a lemon sauce
    Greens

Some cinnamon baklava finished the feast!

    Regards,
    CAthy2

Agreed, Cath. Nice having your mom there, glad to meet her.

After discussing whether any of these fried goodies (not the shrimp) were sourced locally, I asked the owner and he said the smelt, yellow perch & blue gill were brought down from Canada, which led to a meandering discussion about the breeding habits of smelt. G-rated, of course.

I don't care where this stuff came from, because to my way of thinking half the battle is in the breading & frying, which at the Cap't's is pretty darn close to a 10/10. I just like the way they do it. And of course, the jumbo fried shrimp had that snap!

EC Dave was curiously close-mouthed about the upcoming foray next month, which is fine because I have a Russian hacker friend who also reads minds...

    Until then,

    Jay

Eddie, Will, and Katie were sitting at an adjacent table. Mumbling conversation throughout the meal. I suspect plotting a coup d'état .

Now that I think about it, I remember hearing the same phrase over & over from them--"YOU do it! "No, YOU do it!", and so on. The height of strategic planning...

We were actually discussing the fact that in a white military uniform and sunglasses and with a little mustache, Eddie could pass for Pinochet...
