I tried The Quonset Pizza Restaurant in Waukegan last night. I've been actively looking out for pizza joints that have been around since the 50's, and this one has been there since 1946. When we walked in, the smell was a little reminiscent of Marie's on Lawrence which got me excited. The restaurant had three sections, all connected lengthwise. To the right was the carryout section (with freezer case ala Frank's Pizza Palace in Appleton, WI). The middle section had a curved ceiling like an armory and had a large bar and lots of booths. The left section was much quieter and was all tables and booths. My friend ordered a half pepperoni half sausage. I just had a half sausage half cheese. The pizza was a classic thin crust, tavern style pizza (which I was hoping for), but it was not crisp. There was a bit too much cheese, giving it a rubbery feel. The sausage was marble sized balls, and nothing special. My friend said the pepperoni wasn't that good, reminding him of summer sausage. Overall we felt it was a fair pizza, nothing more. This was somewhat of a letdown as I heard some good things about it and was hoping to find another classic old time pizza joint that some of us have been talking about lately. Listening to some of the locals talking about it, you get the impression that they don't get out of Waukegan much!
