Some years ago, Chicago boasted some truly awesome kebabs in a variety of cuisines... Palestinian from Salaam, Pakistani from Khan, etc.

Unfortunately, in my opinion many of those places have fallen off - notably the above-mentioned once stalwarts.

What are your favorite kebabs these days? I'm partial to the smoke kissed beauties at As-Sufara in Palos Hills and to the gamey, fatty lamb specimens at Bai Cafe, the Uzbek place in Lakeview. What places do people love these days? I'd love to organize a kebab crawl sometime in the near future if anyone is interested (you know you are :D ). Let a brother know!

Besides Khan, I've really been enjoying the kabobs at Kabobi on Kedzie.

I nominate Larsa's (3724 Dempster, Skokie). It might be subconsciously influenced by how much I care for their lentil soup, rice & torshi, but the lamb and chicken kabobs are truly great centerpieces to their plates. The kifta versions of beef and chicken look great, but I haven't found the need to try them.

Big fan of Larsa's and their kifta is tasty but pales in savoriness to the koobideh at Kabobi, with Kabul House a close second. (Larsa's chicken kabobs are very juicy, especially for being white meat.)

For me, those (+Khan) are the big ones, together with the Bridgeview-area places that grill over coal -- so, Al Bawadi and whichever is the new place this week that's even better than Al Bawadi.

I am no expert, but goddamn I love the kebabs at Siunik Armenian Grill. When I worked in Glenview, this place was an almost daily stop. And the cabbage salad...my god. My comfort food.

We ordered the mixed grill platter at Clifton Grill just off of Devon recently. The tandoori chicken and lamb chops were terrific, though not everything on the plate was at the same level. Also had some very nice ground chicken kebabs at Afghan Kebab on Montrose the other day. It's been a while, but the beef shish at Jibek Jolu is on our must order list.

    I'd crawl for some kebabs.

Like, you'd crawl through broken glass for some kebabs?
