There is a movement afoot (joke) to pedestrianize the streets around Mariano Park (Bellevue/Rush/State). There will be an organizing meeting at Carmine's on Wednesday Jan. 7, 7pm.*

Relevant to LTH I think, because the park is almost entirely surrounded by restaurants, and it would be nice, in pleasant weather, to stroll around there.

Also, that little kiosk thing in the park that you may (like me) never have paid any attention to? Turns out that it's a very early example of Prairie School architecture, designed by FL Wright associate Birch Burdette Long in 1895. So it probably qualifies for an LTH mention as a Chicago Tourist Attraction Nobody Knows About.

*Sorry, I got this from a flyer posted in the laundry room of my building & don't have any further info re the meeting.

How will one access all those restaurants by car?

"Feet" works if you live in the neighborhood. But judging from the very active valet-parking concessions all those restaurants have, a considerable part of their clientele arrives by wheel.

Maybe they'll take the train? Or park a block away? Or, the valets will station themselves on the edge of the pedestrian area?

What surprises me is that Carmine's was willing to host the community meeting. I'd think they'd be against the idea.

If anyone here attended it, please report.

The kiosk, which was Whispers Cafe for thirteen years, will be taken over by Bow Truss Coffee, per unanimous vote of the Park District board on Nov. 18 2015. New name will be Cafe Birch, deal runs for seven years with three optional one-year extensions. Sorry to see former operators Nemer and Michelle Alia go, they did a fine job. But at least Gibson's didn't get it - their plan basically involved neglecting the landmark kiosk as much as possible & erecting a brand spanking new kiosk at the other end of the Park - cause the Park has just way too much open space as it is, y'know?

Over the weekend, news spread that Whispers Cafe would be returning to the Chicago Park District outdoor venue at the intersection of Bellevue Place, Rush and Cedar streets, a.k.a. “The Viagra Triangle” in the Gold Coast. Whispers was the park’s coffee and snack shop for 13 years before Bow Truss coffee took over in May 2016.
