Evanston Lunch Group: Alexander's Breakfast & Lunch, May 24

Save the date in June for Riobamba in Glenview, but first come to Skokie with the Evanston Lunch Group to try Alexander's Breakfast and Lunch. This is not your typical breakfast-all-day place (not that there's anything wrong with those). Breakfast dishes have better ingredients and more interesting variations, with a nod to Mexican cooking. I haven't tried any of the lunch dishes--hence my interest in our visit--but I expect them to be good, based on the couple of breakfasts I've enjoyed here. Their breakfast potatoes are excellent, and I'm curious to try their house-made corned beef.

Alexander's doesn't take reservations, but they know we're coming. I will be there a bit early to get us a table--there will be 7 of us (Cabbagehead is coming too). See you tomorrow.

I thought Alexander's was very good indeed for the breakfast items, but somewhat less so for the lunch items. The spicy shrimp omelet and blueberry french toast (both daily specials), and the Tuscany skillet, were all excellent. The killer grilled cheese (their name, not mine) was also very good. But the salads were only so-so. We wanted to order the corned beef skillet and the reuben, but they were out of corned beef when we were there.

I would return again, but would concentrate on the breakfast items on the menu.
