    LTH,

As a few LTHers expressed minor dismay at missing the deadline for Time Outs pie contest (C2) I thought I'd mention Time Out's chili contest deadline is Friday. I hear Bruce C, YouPalWill and Trixie-Pea make a damn good bowl of chili. To enter send 50-words as to why your Chili Rocks to eatoutdrinkup@timeoutchicago.com.

Tasting/judging is Nov 19 at The Hideout. $10 lets you taste the 25 finalists, music and free Tumms. (Kidding about the tumms) More info on the Time Out web site.

Note: No affiliation with the chili contest on my part, neither as participant or judge, simply posting a heads-up.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

    Hi,

Trixie-pea is entering her chili in the TOC chili cook-off. As GWiv mentioned, it's this coming Saturday at the Hideout (5pm)-$10 gets you in the door and the opportunity to try all 25 chilis--including trixie's--which will undoubtedly will reign supreme. Bean-O will be supplied, as needed, by pdaane.

    That's right!!

    Oink,

I'll be there! I'll be going commando style, meaning no Beano (and hopefully no beans in the chili, either.

    LTH,

Trixie-Pea is competing in Time Out's Chili Contest this Saturday 11/19, 5pm at Hideout. I understand her chili is fantastic! Most of it's secret, but I snuck a peek at her recipe, margarine, ground low-salt Spam, DelMonte ketchup, beef bouillon and Pure Imitation Norwegian Chili Powder. I can hardly wait to eat a big bowlful. Ok, just kidding about the recipe, but no need to give her competitors any hint as to her recipe. :)

$10 admission gets you tastes of all 25 chilies, but, more importantly, the right to vote for your favorite. I suggest Chicago Voting Rules apply to Trixie-Pea, early and often. :) Bring a donation for the Greater Chicago Food Depository and receive $2 off admission.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

All of this bean talk disturbs me greatly. I thought this was supposed to be a chili contest. :? Hopefully entries with beans will be automatically disqualified, thus helping Trixie-Pea's chances to be Chili Queen.

    Steve,

Time Out wrote that, not me. I'm a straight meat and toasted ground chile kind of a chili guy.

If it's got beans in it, it ain't chili. It's soup or perhaps some kind of stew.

I generally put beans in mine, but I know it is not chili. I call it "Midwestern soupy chili" :) And for what it is, it's quite tasty. But it ain't chili :)

I'm not saying that a chili-like recipe with beans can't be good (the Chow Poodle makes her "chili" with beans and ground beef, but that's to be expected.), I'm just saying that it has no place in a chili contest.

We may or not be foregoing the 2005 National Female Golden Gloves Tournament in Cicero later that evening, depending on how many rounds Trixie-Pea goes with the runner-up.

Steve with one pie judging experience under your belt, I will be interested in your opinion of how chili judging was conducted. Will the chili contest be totally subjective: I like it or I don't like it. Or will there be some sort of criteria evaluating various components like we did with the pies. I recall the irony last summer when the best pie overall was strawberry-rhubarb, which was a flavor combinations not personally favored by at least 2 of 3 judges. Yet it achieved superior score in various criteria removing personal preference; which I thought was pretty effective judging.

I look forward to the reports on this event.

I have a feeling that it is simply who gets the most votes, since the attendees all get to vote for their favorite. I don't think there is an actual panel of judges. I'll let you know.

Yea, my impression is that it's more for fun-bravado-smackdowns-etc... then for than examining the dichotomy of a superior chili.

I mean the title of the contest is "my chili can beat up your chili."

And even though (I think) it's a bit tongue-in-cheek, it'll still be a good time, and fun to taste what other folks consider great chili (huge range).
I do agree with SteveZ though, Cinncinnati 5-way chili (beany) is very good and I like to make and eat it this way, but real chili is meat and chile & nothin' else.

    See you there,

    trixie-pea

    LTH,

The Time Out chili contest was fun, got to taste a bunch of different, and in some cases I really do mean different, chili, drink beer and hang out with friends. Trixie-Pea did not win, though her bourbon accented chili was fantastic, I never caught the name of the winner.

The contest itself was well managed, with live music, flowing beer and an easy to understand scoring system. The only factor that slightly detracted is the chili contest was held in the backroom of the Hideout. Which, while a cool as hell bar I had never been to before, was too small for all the people.

After the chili contest a few of us went to Tampopo, which was terrific and deserves a post of it's own.

    Enjoy,
    Gary
