I would like to nominate China Star restaurant. I moved to Niles a few years back and just asumed I would have to trek to Chinatown for good Chinese.

In desperation we tried a few local places only to be dissapointed on a few fronts.
1.Price.....most placs were way too expensive.
    2. Chauncey-ness (A made up word..sorry) AKA not a good size portion.
    3. Items that all tasted the same

Day by day we kept passing this tiny storefront that advertised China Star and we decided to try it.
It is really great. The food is very fresh! The flavors are distinct. When an item says "hot" it truly is.
NO CHAUNCEY-NESS!! Portions are huge and reasonably priced!
    TRY IT!!

Not to rain on this parade-- and actually, since I am often up that way, this is a good suggestion for me to check out sometime-- but I will say that it pretty much goes against the idea of this program to make the first post on a restaurant be its nomination for the award.

The idea for the GNR award is to reward places that have been talked about favorably on the board by a variety of people. Obviously we won't have consensus by every poster on every restaurant, but there's a sense of when a place has been talked about positively by enough different folks to feel that it's one of the places that "LTHForum" likes.

If you have a new place ("new" meaning not talked about here yet) you should post about it, going into as much detail about recommended dishes and so on, in the regular boards, enticing others to give it a try. But I think it's fair to say that until at least a few different people have posted about a place, we wouldn't feel like it's ready for a community award.

Though I have to say, "Chauncey-ness" may deserve an award, it's pretty much perfect.

I made the same mistake when I nominated Cajun Charlie's last time around. I guess the way to get support for the nomination is to post about it under eating out, trying to get others interested in trying it, and get a buzz going that way, then do the nominating thing. I'm not a moderator or anything, but if the officials of the board disagree, let me know.

I don't think there are that many rules... are there? mostly common sense ones when it comes to regular posting, I hope... but this Great Neighborhood Restaurants thing is designed for a specific purpose, and NR706 describes it correctly. It's nothing against the restaurants (or posters who nominate them, certainly!), and the discovery of these places is all to the good, even if they don't have the widespread enthusiasm yet that would probably lead to the award.

That's pretty much how it works.

To reinforce Dickson's post earlier today, the buzz needs to be from within the LTHforum community. Though it is nice to see information on other boards, to reach GNR it needs to be supported by the LTHforum community.

Since there are calls for comments on nominees, and I actually went and tried this place:

    No. I don't think so.
