Hi, LTH! I would love to find some fresh pawpaw fruit for sale (but I'd take frozen puree too). If anybody notices some, could you post it here? Thanks!

I was hoping to make it to the Ohio Pawpaw festival this weekend (Sept 14-16), but I don't think it's going to work out. https://www.ohiopawpawfest.com/

Oriana sells fresh paw paw fruit at the Green City market on Wednesday and Saturday, and at the Logan Square market on Sundays. She has come to the Evanston Saturday market a few times, and she comes to the winter market at the ecology center a few times a year in December. Her Asian pears are to die for. She used to come to the Glenwood market on Sundays too, but I just looked on her website, and she does not mention it. She also sells paw paw trees if you want to grow your own.

Just as an update: I emailed Oriana, and she promptly responded that the pawpaw wasn't available yet. I'll check again in a couple weeks.

Anko, maybe you should grow your own pawpaw! Stark Bros is having a sale, even as we speak! : )

Haha, thanks for the info! Growing pawpaws is something I have considered. I just want to actually taste them first!

If you grow them make sure to protect the fruit. As a former Chicagoan now in Tennessee we’ve got pawpaws all over the woods but have yet to successfully harvest one. I see them on the plants but they are there one day and then they are not.

Botanically they are the only temperate member of an ancient family which include soursop and cherimoya. The flowers are quite interesting and are fertilized by flies and beetles attracted to the smell. Finally, they are not self-fertile in the wild but I don’t know if there are now cultivars which are.

I planted one about 8 years ago. We have gotten flowers the past two years, but no evidence of fruit. Squirrels would get it even if it did!

    Beautiful tree actually.

    Teatpuller--

From what I've learned, you need *two* pawpaw trees, of different varieties, in order to get fertilization. If you know what variety you have, you can check into a proper pollinator on google, most likely on the Stark Bros web site.

I just got my weekly email from Green City Market saying that they will have paw paws for sale at the next Saturday market.

Thanks for the help to find these NFriday! I was able to get 1 last Sunday at the Logan Square market from Oriana http://asianpearfarm.com/. It looked like she had about 5-6 left, but said she'd only give out 1 per customer, since so many had let her know they were coming to get one. Sounds like a growth market!

What an interesting taste! Mixup of banana and mango and pineapple. Hard to imagine them growing natively in this area. I am intrigued by the idea of growing some myself, but I'll have to think about if I really have the right conditions in my yard for a couple trees.

A few years ago I bought fresh pawpaws from Integration Acres (http://www.integrationacres.com), based in southern OH. With shipping it was $23 for 2 lbs but I don't know what the pricing is now as the season has ended in southern OH. It looks like they currently have 2lb packages of frozen pulp for $16 + shipping.

If I remember correctly, the order was only filled once the fruit was ready, which was many weeks after I placed my order. A ripe pawpaw is very fragile, so the fruit came very carefully wrapped in newspaper. Fortunately, all my fruit arrived intact although a couple had to be eaten immediately because they were so ripe. The remaining fruit slowly ripened over the course of a few days.

While all the pawpaws had a custardy texture, the flavor varied significantly from fruit to fruit. They were always tropical but some tasted more of banana/pineapple/mango/passionfruit while others also had a richer chocolate/coffee flavor.

I was very happy with the quality of the fruit, but the cost and need to remember to order a month or two early means that I'll probably only buy them every few years.
