Schmeisser's in Niles is closing

Schmeisser's is closing according to their weekly email! This is a real kick in the head for us. They are our go-to place. Their email says:

"It is the END OF AN ERA! After 67 years and 3 generations, Schmeisser's Sausage will be closing! Saturday, November 3, 2018 WILL BE OUR FINAL DAY OF BUSINESS or when we run out of stock."

"From the entire Schmeisser Family and all of the Schmeisser employees, it has been a pleasure and honor to serve you."

I think I will try to get there today. I have a new stand-alone freezer that could hold a lot of veal dogs and sausages.

And I just finally figured out how to spell Schmeisser's!!! )-:

If you go, bring cash. They do not accept credit cards and if you want to write a check, you have to register with them.

It's a shame when shops like this close and it will be missed. I think they crush it on the German-style sausages. And that goose pastrami is insane.

But I have to say I personally never found much else to love about this place. My office is very nearby, so it is super convenient but after trying a bunch of their other sausages, I just kind of stopped going. I felt many of them kind of tasted the same and (relatedly?) didn't necessarily align in name with what my idea of what they were supposed to taste like. I found myself going down the street to Minelli's for Italian or Kurowski's in Logan for Polish, etc.

But again, the world would be a better place if there were more of these types of shops in it and this is, unquestionably, a loss.

You are absolutely correct, a much better place. This happened up here in Milwaukee a few years back. A German couple ran a sausage shop on 70th just south of Greenfield on the West side of the street. I went about one a quarter and stocked up. Always bought the veal bologna sliced thinly and opened that before I started my car to roll into a cylinder an inhale pieces as I finally drove away. That good. Also many types of great sausage. Anyway a few years back, I stopped in and saw that is was empty. They did take month long vacations to Germany on occasion, but this looked different. I waited a week and called the West Allis chamber only to find out they were indeed closed. Brought a tear to my eye. Recently, the European Homemade Sausage Shop run by Frank Jablonski closed after many years. Many stock runs here also. Can't really replace the knowledge of those two. Man, I miss that stuff.

When I used to work in Niles I loved stopping in there.
It was a real "old fashioned" butcher shop that could cut whatever you wanted to order.
A true loss.

Two emails yesterday from Smeisser's:

"Due to overwhelming demand, we are still in full production of most of your favorite items. Stop in and place an order. Kurt will do his best to fill it."

When we were there yesterday, they had good amounts of most items but were running low on white brats and were out of breakfast sausages. They said more were being made. The place was medium busy.

"Due to overwhelming support from our customers, we need a little extra time to open on Saturday, October 20, 2018. We will open from 10 am to 5 pm."

In my household, it feels like a time machine with references to places and people from the 1930's and forward.

I just mentioned Schmeisser's to my parents. My Mom instantly recognized the name claiming her parents bought their sausages. She believes they once had a location on the north side. Those who visit Schmeisser's, could you ask?

My Dad grew up on the north side, too, and has no recollection of any Schmeisser's.

Yes, sometime I am sorry I bring things up, but at least this query can be quickly responded to.

All our old favorites disappearing. I am so upset by the state of our world. There seemingly does not appear to be longevity in business.

I grew up eating sausage from Schmeisser's. It was a delicious treat that we'd have once or twice a year. Dad would bring the white brats and smoked thuringers home and grill them. It was awesome.

Moving out on my own, even though I still live within an easy reach and drive past at least every few weeks and, despite my fond memories, I hardly ever went to Schmeisser's. There was no particular reason to not go. Maybe my tastes changed? Maybe good sausage is available at other places I frequent? Maybe I just associated it with a 'place dad went' and left it at that.

I'm sad it's gone but, probably as much as anyone else, I am partially to blame. Sorry about that.
