Hi -- I'm in search of the best tonkatsu in Chicagoland. Am open to city or suburbs. Ideally, there are a few great tonkatsu offerings around, as I'd love to end up with several places to check out. I'm in the western suburbs but not aware of any great preparations around here--and I'd be delighted if there were a solid one in my neck of the woods--but am prepared to travel a bit to find a really great one. Thanks in advance.

I’ve had the sandwich here and it was very good (as could be expected)...

Have enjoyed the tonkatsu at Izakaya at Momotaro, available a la carte and on their prix fixe happy hour menu, which is not much-publicized but I believe one of the great deals in town. Also, their omurice is one of my favorite dishes--fun, well-executed, and delicious.

This is a favorite winter dish of mine as well, and my stalwarts are Sen Sushi in Oak Park (more refined / light) and Kikuya Japanese in Hyde Park (which is generous and more rustic). Both are moist and served with plentiful katsu sauce, a must, occasionally supplemented when carried out by refrigerated Russell's BBQ sauce which is a descendant thereof.

I randomly made tonkatsu at home on Sunday and forgot how annoying and messy the battering process is (flour, egg wash, panko).

Appreciate the suggestions as I'll be heading out for my tonkatsu fix in the future...:)

Yes! 2 things I'm always happy to do at someone else's house:

    1) Make tonkatsu/schnitzel
    2) Deep-fry a turkey

If you're into embarrassing amounts of good food for a low price, Aloha Wagon has a chicken katsu which I am partial to, although my usual is half hamburger steak/half kalua pork.
