Keep up the good work, Panther!

I had both the bowl and pita with all three sauces; hot, garlic mayo and tahini.

Also I think the pita gives a better mingling of salad, meat and base in each bite. As I was snacking on some of the reheated pita sandwich last night I was able to enjoy all three sauces. The hot tended to settle to the bottom and I would have to pause from time to time. :) Delicious Heat!

Still waiting to join you and your coworkers some day, other than Friday’s, I have good flexibility and availability.

Max and Benny's Restaurant (Jewish Deli)
    461 Waukegan Rd, Northbrook

I was flying blind on this one. Checked the few in the area and this one called to me. :)

Big! place! Generously sized deli in the front and a restaurant area that went on and on.

    9A614290-2734-466A-A578-7B7ACCFF5F31.jpeg

Pretty busy when I arrived just after noon but they still had a few tables available.

If you look up above I stuck to what I was planning to order.

    ED4143E4-B70B-4CBA-8F8E-0F0F0A14D342.jpeg Mish Mosh Soup

Wow! Could of easily been a meal or two alone (for $12 it better be generous :) ) and it included a couple of matzo balls and kreplach. Nicely flavored broth with plenty of noodles and rice. Goodly amount of vegetables too.

36C55D6D-4E10-48B6-9E30-807CE4056609.jpeg Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwich

    3996D8E7-D796-4E2E-BE9A-00AB94EFC1E2.jpeg

On the cool side and the meats were layered instead of side by side. Pastrami was a little darker than usual but very good and the corned beef was tender. Eisenberg meat products.

    C8418B0F-A7A0-40AF-A3EE-27ED71D398DC.jpeg Latkes

When I ordered I was hoping for a few but all that came was one. Ordered a few more and the waitress mentioned "Oh! I'll make it an order then" :) Somewhat dense and even though they were nicely browned they were not really crispy. Good flavor though.

My Jewish friend that joined me mentioned that while he eats at a smaller (3 table) deli and usually breakfast, most in the area consider this the best deli in the area. Sometimes you get lucky. :)

About 45 minutes, in and out. Not bad.

    Next weeks adventures?

    Brew Monday (12/17 5:15 to 6:15)
    Okocim Bar
    6801 W Addison St, Chicago

This was an unplanned stop last time but I enjoyed my visit! Nice patrons, good barmaids and some very good perogies. 22 oz mugs of Żywiec don't hurt anything. :)

    Lunch out Friday (12/21 12:10 to 12:50)
    Bonchon
    1615 Milwaukee Ave #100, Glenview

When I first started in the area this place was brought up and I was eager to visit. A little more research and discovered it was closed for lunch.

Well, time passed and they decided to open for lunch! Yay! Better hurry before they change their mind. :)

Once again I am nearing the end of my current extension. :(

I was going to take a pass, since it it is too limited as a place to take my group, and too many other dinners (just returned from 7 spices with conservation group), Monday/Tuesday are LTH lunches, Thursday is banquet with dance group at Furama North, etc, through to Dec 31/Jan 1 pot luck banquets....then noticed sesame salad on menu, so that plus kimchee Cole slaw maybe pickled radish, so planning to come at this point.

Sorry but I have to cancel. :( I will be pushing Bonchon off to the next week (12/28)

I was just notified that there will be a departmental Christmas luncheon tomorrow. I am glad it is at a place I haven't visited and is on my short list. :) Score!

Even with the holidays I will still be on the usual schedule. Monday Brew Day will be local to Oak Park though. We have some great area breweries so... :)

Well, Sad about not being able to continue my Friday Lunch Out routine tomorrow (even though I am going out and to a place I want to visit) I did have and opportunity to grab a quick lunch today...

    Kickin Burgers and Wings
    9196 W Golf Rd, Niles

I had passed this place several times and once doing a little research I became intrigued...

    American Fast Food
    Indian Owners
    Mexican Food as well

Well one out of three isn't too bad. :)

Owner appeared to be Korean and no Mexican food to be seen. Maybe an ownership change?

    Burgers, sandwiches, salads, standard sides...

A few things stood out, potstickers, a signature burger, a Bulgogi sandwich (think cheesesteak). That is what I ordered.

There were a few things that were revealed upon my visit that my research did not uncover. Fish, chicken and pork Katsu (breaded and fried) and a fairly extensive (15 item Korean menu). Many dishes containing fish.

    A5B073D3-3FCD-4DF7-834E-79FF5A70CBA6.jpeg The Kickin' Burger

Double patty, American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickles, Kickin' sauce.

With an open kitchen I was able to watch the preparation. Refrigerated burgers, first partially cooked on the flattop and then finished on the gas broiler. Tomatoes and onions freshly sliced and lettuce peeled.

Stacked tall it was a challenge to eat the half without some gymnastics. Pretty much a standard cheese burger as the Kickin' sauce was either applied lightly or not at all. a nice sauce is what the burger needed. Flame broiling was a good touch!

    3AD941FD-71C8-4D27-905F-4353F2CADC85.jpeg Bulgogi Sandwich

Thinly sliced sirloin marinated in Bulgogi sauce, Mozzarella, grilled onion and green pepper on a french roll with special sauce.

Once again think a Philly Cheesesteak but with marinated beef. Freshly marinated too as I watched her put it in the marinade and swish it around for a while.

Very good sandwich and the star of the show! Flavorful and tender beef, vegetables had just a bit of crunch, cheese completely melted. Once again I was wishing for a stronger (any) flavor of the sauce. Bread was nicely sopft from being steamed in the foil wrap

    1F1A8A2F-AA87-447D-BEA2-7E1E096F8377.jpeg Potstickers

A little larger and thinner than most. Nicely crisped with a standard vinegar/soy sauce. I would order them again.

All in all a good visit! Once again I was the only (and probably first) customer as she had to turn on the grills, start the fryer. Another customer came in right before I left. The layout was similar to other Korean places in the area, A bar (mostly beer), the open kitchen, karaoke equipment.

    EE859D7D-D797-4336-A387-66FD5CC9B791.jpeg

Not sure if these below items are still available. She mentioned the printed menu was old and the prices out of date. Also these items did not appear on the overhead sign board.

    Brew Wednesday (12/26 5:30 to 6:30)
    Kinslahger Brewing Company
    6806 Roosevelt Rd, Oak Park

For the holidays I am going to include Linda in my brew stop so it will be close to home.

Our favorite taproom with awesome staff and beers. Free food delivery from...

    Big Guy's Sausage Stand
    7021 Roosevelt Rd, Berwyn
    (708) 317-5213

We will probably order a snack.

    Lunch out Friday (12/28 12:10 to 12:50)
    Bonchon
    1615 Milwaukee Ave #100, Glenview

Recycled plan from the aborted attempt last week.

    BEC41815-E58A-4329-BB19-B2C101B99E3F.jpeg Udon Noodle Soup

Back at work and after lunch I kept thinking about the leftovers in the fridge. I had to warm it up and finish it off. :)
A touch sweet, a touch spicy, the most in depth soup? Nah. But very satisfying. Noodles cooked just right and a bit of bite to the mushrooms.

Spicy Or Soy Garlic Sauce was available for both the potstickers and chicken. Spicy wasn't all that spicy (no sweat :) ).

    0083B2C1-B3FC-42FA-9B7B-1FC9DD4B43B3.jpeg Potstickers

I really have been enjoying potstickers lately. I think I just like them. A tad smaller than some others I have had recently but they were light and nicely crunchy (even with the kitchen applied sauce).

    4 Wings + 2 Drumsticks
    FEBFA537-DB68-487C-B6EC-490508A7C095.jpeg

Once again the breading was light and nicely crunchy (even with the kitchen applied sauce). I was hoping to get some thighs and breast but as I suspected it was just wings.

    BB0865EE-3FB0-471F-8E50-293AA5525919.jpeg Pork Buns

Almost little tacos. :) Nice fresh and soft bun with a very thick and tender filling. A standout and a filling part of the meal!

    Coleslaw
Creamy with a nice fresh crunch. Good but pretty standard.

Dishes ordered by others at the table (no sharing action today)...

This smelled really good when it came out.

    2F77A196-7AFE-41D5-924E-D6777E01695E.jpeg Kimchi Coleslaw

As the name implies, Coleslaw and Kimchi mixed together.

What a great 1-2-3 combination in this little mall! I would like to come up and hit all three someday.

    My planned excursions this week.

    Happy New Years!

Monday Brewday on Wednesday (1-2 6:00 to 7:00)

    BuckleDown Brewing
    8700 47th St, Lyons

Once again with the holidays I will be including Linda in my visit and it has been way too long since we last visited.

A great place and a straight up taproom. No food, games, just great beer drinking. :) ... and our beloved San Miguel (11% Belgium Triple) was just tapped not too long ago.

    Friday Lunch Out (1-4 12:10 to 12:50)

    San Soo Kab San
    7901 Golf Rd, Morton Grove

I have been jonesing for some Korean BBQ for a while and when I discovered they had an outpost close to my work I was excited. :) My favorite in the city and I hope it translates well.

I did put out a call to the forum for recommendations but it fell on deaf ears. :(

All in all it is looking like a great start for the new year!

    Had a great lunch Friday!

In my estimation their northern outpost is as good as their venerable location in the city.

Big, beautiful and modern restaurant with many different types of seating. Private rooms on one side, long tables for large groups on the other with general seating in the center.

    Service fast and efficient.

I have been visiting several Korean places lately but not BBQ so...

    C4B361E5-FC6E-460A-AC31-5F9A06A131BD.jpeg Bulgogi
    Marinated Thin Sliced Beef

Nicely marinated, tender. Huge order! If I had been grilling I would of browned it some more, allowed the marinade to caramelize a little more.

The onion and marinate at the bottom of the dish was sublime to rub the meat in!

Very tasty and My Bride agreed enjoying it a day later.

    0C2EA555-ED29-4AA3-B7AC-7BF5D2D6BCD4.jpeg Banchan

As usual for this restaurant the Banchan was great! Limited selection (only 6 or 7 :) ) but all items were a hit. Fresh and crunchy where it was needed. I would imagine at dinner you might get the huge, wide selection as at the Chicago location.

    85280279-3F6C-4858-BAC7-A26B5911CAAE.jpeg Donkatsu (Tonkatsu)
    Breaded Pork Cutlet

Nice, thin and as juicy as a thin cut of pork could be. A good crunch to the breading.

The shredded cabbage had a mayo based sauce applied on top. It was refreshing having it not as a traditional slaw preparation to preserve the nice crunch.

Tried to get a bun/bread to make it into a sandwich and was told, no.

Once again this translated well reheated

F13E0CF6-DDFA-4380-A6A8-B5AEFD64E8C5.jpeg Gal Be Tang + Jjim Mandu
    Short Rib Soup with Dumplings

A double win here. Got to try the short rib and also the dumplings.

Mildly seasoned broth that benefited from a splash of the provided chili oil mixture, delicate dumplings served on the side, tender meat falling off of the (included) bones.

A pleasure to eat and I had to hold off so I could enjoy the other entrees.

A winner in the area! Better than SGD? I’ll have to go back to try their BBQ. No exhaust hoods so...

Perhaps in some areas but since they don't have live coals at San Soo Gab San in Glenview, I don't think the bbq stacks up very well at all compared to the flagship location at 5247 N. Western Ave. YMMV.

I did take a peek into ‘the pit’ (covered) and it was filled with charcoal. From what I might assume it is started with gas.

The Bulgogi tasted fine and could of benefited by a grill. My guess was it was a fajita preparation.

It would be fun to return with a big enough group to see how the pit works and taste the charred product.

I was imagining that the preparation of the meats and Banchan might be done at a central location and could be identical?

It'd be worth asking but I'm not sure it would even matter. When I spoke to the one of the owners, she seemed somewhat frustrated that they were simply not allowed (by the city) to have live coals at their newest entity (San Soo BBQ in River West) anywhere but outside on the back patio, and even that was still in the works last I heard. But the night I spoke to her, at the Western Avenue location, 2 chefs from River West were in the house having dinner. She made a point of explaining to me that she had trained them very intensively on how to make each and every dish. So, I know they take it quite seriously.

When I go to Glenview, I avoid the bbq but everything else I've had there, especially the soups and stews, line up pretty exactly with Western Avenue. Unfortunately, some elements are simply beyond ownership's control.

    Outing plan for the week

The holidays are over. :( Great time! :)

Tuesday Brew Day (1-8 from 4:40 to 5:10)

    Macushla Brewing Co
    1516 E Lake Ave, Glenview

I have tried and enjoyed the local breweries. This one I have grown fond of. The good and varied beers, the availability of great food. A nice solid little tap room.

Trouble is they’re not open on Mondays.

With the new year I have a recurring obligation on Wednesdays so it will be Tuesdays with a occasional Monday.

Friday Lunch Out (1-11 from 12:10 to 12:50 (I never hit my departure time)).

    Yanni's
    2601 Navy Blvd, Glenview

Haven’t had Greek yet, coulda had a gyros a few times...

Some Saganaki, some Pastitsio, maybe a kabob? I’ve been dreaming about my visit. :) As much as I love Lamb Shank is just not in the plans (I don’t think they have it anyway (?!?) ).

Another great week and continuation of the New Year!

Interesting that despite the kudos here, on Friday Panther said (with which I agreed) that the Bulgogi was a bit dry. Could almost have reused the plate without washing it. This isn't the first time, IMHO/IIRC, the written post is more positive than at venue....

My dish (sorry for not posting earlier, and I missed seeing the updates before now) was Octopus Dol Sot Bibimbab = Rice and assorted vegetables w/ octopus in hot stone. Marked on the menu as "spicy". Nice melding of flavors, sizzling hot.

Maybe because I think we were the ONLY non Koreans in the restaurant they gave us the watered down version, but I could barely detect any heat, and thought Panther's Bulgogi was a milder than I have ever had before, also. No hot sauce on the table, and (see below) I didn't even attempt to get any.

Service might have been acceptable, but not commendable. Even when I eventually caught somebody's eye that I needed more water, it was forgotten and I had to wave again my glass till they realized they had forgotten. After several attempts to get attention for another napkin, I gave up and walked to the server's station and got myself another. I'm not one to get upset about this, but I know some others are.

I would go back, at least for lunch, especially if they add the two interesting and inexpensive appetizers listed on the Chicago menu (Coma-Ae and Seaweed salad) but (I asked) not available in MG, but its not high on my priority list. I am also intrigued by the goat soup and a few other dishes. I say the following to help me remember: I'd plan to ask for hot sauce when placing my order, maybe a pitcher of water, and make sure they know I don't want the "american" version.

Have you checked their hours? Their website says they don't open before 4:30 PM except for noon on Sundays. No prices on their web menu. From zomato, entrees are mostly $18-26. The daily special is $22.

    Not open for lunch.

No problem with the change as there is another Greek restaurant in the area and based on looking at both websites, side by side, it would appear they have a common owner.

    Plateia Mediterranean Kitchen - Bar
9860 N Milwaukee Ave, Des Plaines

This restaurant came recommended by several people on this thread and I am glad to take up their recommendation.

Very similar website design (almost exact), menu items (almost exact)... and an added bonus, Lamb Shank (Kokinisto)! :)

Same Bat Day (1-11), Same Bat Time (12:10)

    Thanks again...

Does anyone actually have proof that san soo gab san produces different dishes for non-asians? As I have joked with friends, I've never not been Korean here so I can't really say one way or another.

However I have postmated from here on numerous occasions and the food seems exactly the same to me. Banchan is much more sparse, but that's how they roll for carryout orders.

Their website identifies that as glenview, and asking Google maps to show me glenview includes that area.

Shouldn't that be "same Plat Day, same Plat time?"

I'm in for now a bit reluctantly as it seems pricey for lunch, unless I missed a "lunch specials" page. Anything other than pasta and burgers is $30 with tax and tip. Was going to say "no" then found eggplant at about $21. Love eggplant. Today's yemeni was $20 with several people taking food home and a vegetarian sampling a few dishes gratis.

Whenever I drive that section of Milwaukee near lunchtime, traffic is bad with people going to restaurants along there, and not just Pita inn, though maybe the others are less of a problem, but be prepared.

Needed a quick carry out lunch and last week my cubical neighbor had reminded me about...

    Pita Inn
9854 N Milwaukee Ave, Des Plaines

It had been years since I had been there and I always remember it fondly.

Thinking about what to order (and My Bride was short on dinner fixin's) I decided to go vegetarian. :) Lentil soup, Falafel, Hummus and it's attendant Pita.

Everything was as I remembered and it was a satisfying meal. Didn't miss the meat at all.

Had another day with a need to buy lunch (felt like a burger today). I have to get My Bride back on track! :)

Another Board recommendation and after looking around online I was hopeful!

    F9356B0D-9431-49CA-9C6A-D150EECC68C6.jpeg American Classic
Double American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo & side of secret burger sauce

There were actually 2 included sauces and they both tasted like 1000 Island Dressing. Maybe it was 1 1/2 servings?
For a side I got the recommended homemade Tater Tots with a side of Cheese Sauce and a cup of Chicken Noodle Soup.

Wow! Was that a great presentation of the burger! Big, beautiful with a whiff of wood smoke (the burgers are wood grilled) upon opening the container.

    Some observations...

Upon cutting it in half it didn't flow juices as I expected it might but it was cooked a perfect medium rare. Just not very juicy. Maybe lean?

Nice thick patty that gave you a mouthful of meat on each bite.

Regardless of the smoke odor there wasn't a lot of char.

Top bun had a lot of meat and body (firmness).

What I thought to be 1000 Island Dressing was their Secret Burger sauce. While eating I was trying to figure where the spiciness was coming from and this must of been it.

    5C3DADB1-C206-4568-B011-4D67A3EC7F48.jpeg Nailed Medium Rare

Homemade Tater Tots were excellent! Irregular shapes with some nice crunchy edges. Nicely cooked.
Cheese sauce was not your standard food service. Either homemade or a premium sauce. Huge portion too as I had enough for 2 servings of tots.
Hidden under the tots was a slice of breaded zucchini. Fun hidden treat.

    420DD12D-3A92-4BD1-81E0-76EFC3B66A73.jpeg Chicken Noodle Soup

For an upscale place I expected a hearty soup and wasn't disappointed. Chock full with minimal broth. Full of flavor without the vegetables being overcooked.

    A good visit.

Hoping it would be flamed at the table as is the tradition but no big deal, table not mentioned in the menu either.
Generous helping! Nice and crispy exterior and the cheese kept flowing after being cut. A touch heavy on the lemon wash but not a problem as I love variations on the rule.

Pork Char-Grilled Skewers Served w/ Pita, Tomato, Onions & Tzatziki

Even though it wasn't mentioned on the menu I had to ask if it was available with lamb? No, just pork and chicken. I had a strong taste for lamb but not enough to deviate from my plan.
Nicely flame broiled and tender pieces of pork. 2 filled skewers. the pita was a little wet from oil and juices so I would cut a piece of meat, dip in the sauce and follow it up with onion and tomato. Usually an extra dip of sauce. Tomato not in season.

Great, traditional flavor! I also love the Tomato Herb Sauce so I got a side of that as well to spoon over the top. A bit of crispiness on the top and not too much liquid. Just right.

As I was looking over the menu before my visit I happened to spot this section, and I was glad I did!
A suprise star of the meal. :) Not necessarily Greek (or maybe it is?) but what a great combination of flavors. The Prosciutto was cooked crispy (not unlike bacon) and married well with the hard boiled egg slices. The chipotle mayo added a great tweak of heat. The gouda and tomato got lost in the shuffle.

    7E31401C-A862-4709-91DB-805F3BA19DAE.jpeg Sesame Bread

Lightly crispy on the outside and tender and slightly moist on the inside. Maybe fresh cooked and if not, they had me fooled.
Even though I knew I had a big meal coming I kept taking another slice. :) Butter was hard as I took a pass on the supplied olive oil.

Great to hear Plateia came through for you.
Even though the grilled octopus, calamari and shrimp (and salads) are what draw me here, more traditional dishes like pasticcio and moussaka are loved by family members who come back specifically for them. The personal baked pot serving style may be part of it.

    Outing plan for the week

Tuesday Brew Day (1-15 from 4:40 to 5:10)

    Macushla Brewing Co
    1516 E Lake Ave, Glenview

This will be my go to with a monthly excursion to other places. Really enjoyed my visit last week!

Friday Lunch Out (1-18 from 12:15 to 1:00).

New Plan! See post next page...

    Amici Ristorante
    7620 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles

    I was considering...

    Cafe Lucci
    609 Milwaukee Ave, Glenview

But Amici appears to compare at a better price point. More homey, not as fancy.

I haven't visited an Italian restaurant yet? Heard a few good things about this place and an looking forward to the visit. The pastichio from last week always reminds me of lasagna. :)

A little further west than you've been are a couple of good options:
    1) Salerno's at Kensington and Wolf (there's a good Mexican place called Mi Restaurante there too -- try the Carne en su Jugo or the Pambazo). They're a family branch of the Berwyn Salerno's, nothing awesome but always solid. I think they still have a weekday $4 spaghetti and meatballs lunch special.
    2) Giaccomo's just north of Central on Wolf. A little higher end, really good red sauce joint (try their picky-packy sauce if you like garlic).

I am familiar with the Salerno's saga. :) Actually the solid connection to the old Berwyn location (16th and then Grove) was Arnie who faithfully carried on the family tradition. The other locations , while good are nothing outstanding, are an expansion of the restaurant by another family member. Something got lost in the expansion.

This place sounds really good, 10 minutes from work, and will go on the list for when Italian comes around in the rotation again.

My cousin took my Mom to Salerno's in Berwyn a few times and really liked it.

Which Salerno location(s) do you consider the most faithful to the original? I want to take Mom, but I don't want to waste my time on the wrong one.

    Thanks!

There are no locations in Berwyn anymore. Original was on 16th but moved to...

    Salerno's Pizza On Grove
    3250 Grove Ave, Berwyn

All of the current locations are from the expansion. Nothing wrong with them but they are not the same. If you had never been to the original location you wouldn't understand.

Arnie went out of business and sold his pizza recipe to a beef/pizza place along the tracks in Berwyn...

    Brando's Beef
    6838 Windsor Ave, Berwyn, IL

He even came in and taught them how to make it.

When that place closed the recipe ended up at Bubba's on Ogden but the owner had no interest in the recipe and let it languish.

    Bubba and Bobby's Beef
    6333 Ogden Ave, Berwyn

Bubba's is now out of business as well.
