Kiko's Market & Restaurant

I've driven by many times, and finally stopped yesterday to take a look. I didn't have time to stay, but was suprised by how relatively swanky the place looked inside, and I was espeically impressed by the large, serene and shady outdoor seating area. The menu has a clear slant toward middle European classics, with some ecclectic things thrown in (grilled sloppy joe stuffed with cheese, anyone?), and plenty of offal offerings.

There's a butcher shop/ Bosnian market attached to the restaurant, and that looked pretty interesting too.

Anyway, I'm intrigued and will stop in for a meal in the next couple of weeks, but thought I'd see if anyone with experience might have suggestions before I do.

Can you please let us know how Kiko's keeps the sloppy joe from falling through the cracks in the grill?

I ate at Kiko's years ago and back then was surprised to see no mention of it here on lth. I had a friend who introduced me to it and I think I only returned once after that because this was pre-smoking ban here in Chicago and it was pretty smoky there, even at lunch. I remember enjoying my meals there, but we always had a laugh at the menu. It's pretty lacking in description, with just "whitefish fillet" or "cutlet with mushrooms", and the staff back then was not so fluent in English, so I couldn't get many details on the preparation of said items, but we remembered liking whatever we ordered. I think I remember them having cevapcici there and but it was just called "mini sausage" on the menu, which of course makes me think of those little vienna thingies. It might be interesting to go back there again, and I would be interested in what other lthers have to say.

VERRRY carefully...which is why it's $7.00, unless you want to add cheese for another 3...

Anyone know if they sell kajmak and ajvar in the grocery store here?

I've driven by countless times and should be slapped with a trout for not stopping before today. House made bread, juicy cevap, fresh lightly dressed veg salad, cordial English fluent service and comfortable seating. Interesting menu, attached meat market and plenty of parking.

Been back to Kiko's a number of times since my first post with an array of people, including my wife who loved her grilled veal liver with caramelized onions. Had a late night bowl of lamb soup, really more of a stew, that I thought about for a week and a friend, a chef who has traveled extensively in Eastern Europe, has been back 4-5 times since I first took him there.

Kiko's audience may be expanding, the Hungry Hound just did a segment, though I don't think there will be, unfortunately, a waiting line anytime soon.

Five years since the last post, I hope that, like me, this does not indicate LTHers are not going to Kiko's as it certainly deserves traffic.

Had two of my favorites today, Chevapi and split Shopska salad. My lunch companion roasted lamb with potatoes. Side of kajmak and ajvar for slathering on house made bread and chevapi I'm still full from lunch at 7:30pm.
