One of my great experiences on my recent trip to South America was the availability of fresh juices at the juice stands that line streets all through Rio. My special mix was a combination of orange, mango and acerola.

The acerola is a cherry like fruit with a sweet flavor and an abundance of vitamin c.

Upon my return, I bought a Breville juicer. And while I have made some nice orange/mango juice, I really miss the sweetness of the acerola.

Does anyone know of an international market in Chicago that imports acerola from either South America or Mexico?

On a side note, I stopped in Whole Foods last night to pick up some papaya. I was floored by the lack of quality among the little bit of fruit that was there.

RST and I had an exchange about acerola long ago. It is a favorite of mine from Brazil as well. I have seen it in California grown, apparently, mainly for ornamental purposes. But when I saw some locals surreptitiously filling a bag with them, I joined in. I have never seen them fresh for sale in any form in the states. Possibly just too fragile (though if there were a market, I'm sure it would be done).

Yesterday, I stopped in Brasil Legal for a bottle of concentrated acerola juice which they carry for around $2.79 a half litre. They informed me that, if they could garner enough interest, that they would import frozen acerola pulp for sale there. The use of the actual fruit really doers make a dfifference.

My understanding of California acerola is that it is used exclusively in the manufacture of vitamins due to its high vitamin C content. Perhaps on my next trip to the west coast, I'll peruse some of the Spanish markets for fresh acerola.

PS: I should add that the feijoada was excellent yesterday.
