Was the food at Patty’s actually good or was it “so bad, it’s great”? When I lived in Memphis, I used to go to an Iron Skillet accross the Mississippi River in West Memphis, Arkansas. The food was lousy (e.g. burgers griddled to a crisp) but the atmosphere at 2:00 a.m. - old rednecks in trucker’s hats and the air heavy with cigarette smoke - was pure gold.

    It was actually, unironically great.

Was it better than any random greasy spoon that you’d encounter anywhere in America?

My only gripe with Patty's was the weak coffee. I always brought my own in from Dunkin Donuts.

Yeah, definitely. Like many of us, I've literally eaten at dozens (probably hundreds) of these places in my lifetime and none of them quite measure up to Patty's for me. If you're really into breakfast food, you understand that there's actually a huge range in quality between these places. Case in point, Greenwood Restaurant, which gets a mention just above. I've eaten there a few times and (once, briefly) hoped it would help replace Patty's. Their food didn't come close. I used to routinely drive 38 miles round-trip to eat breakfast at Patty's. You can only imagine how many "similar" places I passed on my way there and home.

One caveat: I don't typically eat pancakes, waffles, french toast, so maybe Patty didn't do those well. But for eggs, breakfast meats, potatoes, toast, etc., Patty's was tops for me.

So funny that this topic of Patty's came up again- just recently-
I was describing the "Ham-on-Bone-Hash-w/Sunny-Side-Eggs-on top" and how wondrous her spicing, and Grill grease was in that dish.
Ive asked at bout every Greszy-Spoon and other breakfast place if "they can make........"
and, usually- after trying "another" version- it just ain't the same.
There was a unique combo of textures, flavor, and spice from her secret spice mix, plus the savoriness of the onions etc., that I've yet to find in any other "Hash".
Even when I've made it at home- it's close.......but, no cigar.
    Ah.........memories.

How did it match up to Diner Grill, with which I’m more familiar and which has a foodie following?

While Diner Grill is good Patty behind the counter, slinging hash had no competition.

Her personality, the great food, won everyone over.

Diner Grill is a couple of notches up the flat-top flavor ladder, post fire less so than pre.

Patty's delicious diner dial was cranked up to Ten and beyond, crispy, crunchy, salty, greasy (in the very best way) charred, a no holds barred assault on the mundane middle of the road flavor one finds most ~everywhere. Plus her personality is, was, and hopefully remains, outsized, think Tugboat Annie with a spatula. Plus she made her own bread for toast every day.

Add in the one time I took my father she flirted with him like a stricken schoolgirl, unusual for her to say the least, Patty's Diner is among past places I miss most.

Those pictures bring it all back, don't they?

Recalling an anecdote that speaks to the purity of Patty's dedication to her art: She received a call from "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," in the middle of a lunch rush. Believing the call to be a prank, Patty answered, "I don't have time for this shit!" and hung up the phone. They called back, of course, but she rebuffed their pleas.

Now I kind of wish she had taken them up on their offer. I'd have that footage to look back on. Of course, I'd have had to endure Guy Fieri, but I expect Patty or Susie would have punctured his patter with some salty barbs.

I am in tears. But thank you for the memories of Patty and Susie and all of the LTH-ers who loved Patty's.
