What's a memorably good restaurant either near North & Clybourn or on the way back to Irving Park that I won't need to take a loan out for, with food that doesn't sit comfortably on the tip of my finger, where I can chill in peace and forget I have to go to work the next day? WiFi wouldn't hurt but it's definitely not a requirement. Enough light to read by, but a nice corner from which I can glare and hiss at passersby? Capital. Thank you!

Every time I'm in that area, my first choice is always Pizzeria bebu. Don't know if it checks all the boxes, but fits some of the criteria

This has me stumped! Quiet and good is hard to come by in those parts.

Maybe Bistec Bar and Grill? Its in the spot where the Kingsbury restaurant across from Whole Foods used to be.

A lurker asked me to suggest:

    Table, Donkey & Stick
    Pisolino's
    Red & White Wines
    Webster's Wine Bar

Maybe not exactly in the area she asks about but not far off.

    Happy Birthday!

    Agreed.

Do you want to get drunk? There are a lot of bars in the area as well.

Or just do Uncle Julio's get a swirl, it will not be quiet, and call it a day.

    HBD!

    Oo pretty.
And thanks! I was thinking of going to a bourbon tasting and then heading out to dinner, so no more drinks for me, probably. Unless the tasting is shite.

If you want to get away from North and Clyborn, there's a few places on the way home to Irving Park I'd suggest. Owen and Engine on Western will have good booze and food. There's also Parachute on Elston near Addison. The wine list is interesting with food to match (and not so small portions for such a fancy place). It might be too dark for your needs. For something a little different, I'd recommend Cafe Beograd on Irving Park. All these places have quiet(ish) corners to hide out and good food.

Parachute...I keep forgetting about that place. What an interesting menu!

Cafe Beograd...did they renovate? I don't remember quietish corners but I am fond of the coffee. And the bakery case.

Glenn's Diner is still on Montrose. Here's an old Eater article about the situation.

Sad when that happens. I was there recently and now I feel like a traitor. Glad to see he opened somewhere else, with a nearly identical menu!

I'll throw Vinci into the mix. If you want to eat at the bar they have a spot on the left as you enter that's really isolated and you can get a bowl of pasta and all the wine you want and no one will bother you.

I'm not sure it fits everything you are looking for, but I will recommend a place that was actually recommended to me here for my wife's birthday, Oyster Bah. Definitely fairly light and, when we were there, I did see at least one person dining solo with a book, a glass of wine, and some oysters. I'm not sure it's as cozy as some of the other recommendations but figured I'd throw it out there.
