Greek Feast has opened their second location at the former home of Photo's at Kensington and Wolf in Mount Prospect.

No giant cone, but similar menu of gyros, kabobs etc. We ordered a set of three spreads ($15 for hummos, which was a little coarse and bland compared to Pita Inn), eggplant, which was nicely smoky, and spicy feta which was very good. We also split a gyros plate ($13) which includes two sides (avgolemono soup and fries with feta for a $1 upcharge). Very good gyros, red onion, tzatziki and split cherry tomatoes in a generous portion.

Overall I think they need more lemon in almost everything, but it's a nice addition to my neighborhood.

One of my buddies is a friend of the owner, and put him on the idea of offering a skirt steak. Apparently they tested out every purveyor in the vicinity, and reportedly picked a good one. If it can match the skirt steak at GNR Cross-Rhodes in Evanston, I'll be a happy camper.

    The good, the bad...

First off, there is the caveat of my virgin order at Greek Feast being a carryout, which may or may not color my overall thinking.

Skirt steak was excellent quality but not even close in sheer size or Greek-meat-with-oregano-and-lemon taste to Cross-Rhodes, and it curiously was served with a spicy chimichurri sauce, thankfully on the side--so many better choices for accompaniment.

Avgolemono soup was fair but could have used a lot more lemon. I had been excited at seeing fasolakia (green beans in a traditional tomato sauce), similar to Psistaria's or Opa!'s rendition but this was a poor facsimile, with pulverized beans in almost no sauce. Disappointing, even with my green beans missing in the order.

And the Taverna chicken looked fine (wife had it last night, haven't gotten her review yet) but a small half-chicken, plus two sides--quite small containers of rice, potatoes, soup, beans or salad--cost $13.50, with the skirt steak topping the menu at $21.

Beautiful new buildout, pagers for orders coming up, plenty of seating, but you've still gotta deliver the goods. Food-wise I expected much more culinary dexterity, for a little less money.

Wait, what?! Are you saying the green beans were missing from your order of green beans? Classic.

If this place is anything like the original location -- and it sounds like it is -- it's a hard pass. I went there a couple of times and decided that there was no reason to go back.

    Ron--

Mebbe I didn't 'splain myself well enough...

Ordered 2 Taverna chicken entrees and 1 skirt steak entree. Each entree comes with 2 sides. For each, I ordered the avgolemono soup and tomato green beans. Received 3 soups, 2 beans. Short one bean.

While I dig the menu allowing for non-starch options for the sides, the side containers are abnormally small--small enough to piss me off--and not all that expertly-prepared. The avgo at Omega in Mundelein is tons better.

I would be amazed if the cooks in back were from a village in the Peloponnese...

Ok, got it. Thanks. LOL @ your village comment, too.
