I had lunch today at Ten Mile House. I was not planning to post about it, so unfortunately I did not take any photos. But by the end of lunch, I was thinking about just how terrific it is, and I noticed that there is no LTH topic for the restaurant other than
our Evanston Lunch Group™ lunch there four years ago. So here we are.
I've been to TMH numerous times in the five years since they opened, and it has always been excellent. I have only been there for lunch, but the lunch menu is actually very similar to the dinner menu, with lighter items (sandwiches, burgers) as well as more significant items (entrees) available on both menus. And this is why I love going to TMH for lunch. A lot of restaurants offer very creative food for dinner, but the items on their lunch menu are often simpler, more common, less impressive dishes. Not TMH!
The sections on the lunch menu include starters, bowls (soups), sandwiches, sides, salads, entrees, and desserts, with plenty of choices in each section. The sides are also available with sandwiches instead of fries for a small upcharge. According to our server, their most popular lunch item is the TMH Prime Burger, with the House Smoked Brisket sandwich a close second. Several of their items are smoked, which gives the dining room its pleasant (not overpowering) fragrance.
Several times I have ordered the House Smoked Brisket sandwich, and it's great. This time I decided to get the Moo Shu Shrimp entrée (roasted shrimp, scallion corn pancakes, napa salad, Asian mustard, crisp wonton strips, soy sesame glaze), and it too was great. The pancakes were not the thin, tasteless versions typically served with moo shu in Chinese restaurants, but rather, were similar in thickness and texture to conventional American breakfast pancakes. They were so delicious, even though due to the thickness they were somewhat difficult to use as a wrap. The shrimp were plentiful, and everything about this dish was really yummy.
I was getting together with a friend who I like to impress with my restaurant choices, and I succeeded big-time today. Evanston has a lot of places for lunch, and - with apologies to BAT 17, which I also enjoy - Ten Mile House is my favorite.
I'll try to remember to take photos next time!
