I had some of the best BBQ I have ever had today (and I have had some really good BBQ). Driving back from Michigan to Chicago I decided to take the scenic route. I caught a glimpse of an outdoor smoking operation just off the parking lot of of the Goblin and Grocer on the Dunes Highway. The smells were just right so I decided to check it out. I loved it so much I decided to create an account here and tell folks about it. Each Sunday during the summer, a gentleman with deep experience as a chef and a pitmaster brings his outdoor smoker and prepares a menu of delicious smoked meats. You can order them from your table or at the bar in the cafe.

He makes his own BBQ sauce and rubs. The sauce and rubs were complex in a delightful way. The brisket and ribs were smoked low and slow, the brisket overnight. The meat was full of smoky flavor, tender, juicy, with just the right texture.

The pitmaster is a friend of the G&G's chef . I love collaborations like this. I am going to go out of my way to take some friends over there while it is still summer. It will be worth the trip.

Sounds promising. Does it have a name? What kind of cooker?

Looks like the BBQ is just a Sunday special, not a separate institution. When they first opened in June they were contracting with Filthy Pig but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

After perusing their posts it is clear that Goblin & the Grocer are still getting their act together and it is best to call ahead to get their schedule for the day.

As if I needed another excuse to ride the South Shore electric line, this shop is literally staggering distance from the Beverly Shores train station. Round-trip fare from Millennium Station is $20.00. :)
Please inform us the next time the BBQ is going to be there.

The BBQ is a standard Sunday feature, but you should call ahead or check Facebook to verify the hours on any given day.
