How many Chinatown restaurants have the Three Happiness designation and what are the differences? I understand Little Three Happiness to be the best. Is that right? The reason I ask is that this was in the Sun Times today?

    Restaurant's liquor license suspended
A Chinatown restaurant will lose its liquor license for 30 days, largely because of health code violations, the Appellate Court of Illinois recently ruled. New Three Happiness, 2130 S. Wentworth, had appealed a ruling from the city liquor board, but the decision was supported by the court. Between 2001 and 2002, repeated inspections found rodent droppings in coolers and on food preparation tables, and food kept at improper temperatures. The restaurant was shut down after each of those violations and, combined with the 2001 sale of alcohol to a minor, the liquor board suspended its license. Though owner Eddie Lau claimed the punishment was unfair, the appellate court sided with the city.

    Eric:

I don't know how many places named 'Three Happiness' there are (there are at least two), but, for clarity's sake...

The 'LTH', "Little Three Happiness," that is a favourite of many on this board is not the 'Three Happiness' located at the address mentioned in the article you cite.

See here for a write-up and address of the 'LTH':

    Eric,

As Antonius said, at least two. 'Big' Three Happiness, 2130 S. Wentworth, and 'Little' Three Happiness at 209 W Cermak.

They have different owners, are not affiliated and it is 'Big' Three Happiness that is the recipient of frequent health and sanitation violations. NOT, I repeat, NOT, 'Little' Three Happiness at 209 W Cermak.

The health code issues, as well as the fact 'Big' serves, at best, ineptly executed Chinese Tourist fare, are the reason I am always quite careful to differentiate between the two by use of little and big.

'Little' Three Happiness is my favorite restaurant. Go early, go often.

    Enjoy,
    Gary
