Got a cousin visiting Brooklyn and he wants to know where he could find a good deli. Any other ideas would also be helpful.

Junior's Cheesecake will never give competition to Katz's. But, the cheesecake is excellent and they offer pretty good deli fare along with Burgers. It's on Flatbush Ave extension. There's another on the food concourse at Grand Central.

Junior's is a good bet. However, in Brooklyn there are many Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods. They are not likely to have classic delis, but if he is after Jewish food, places like Crown Heights, Borough Park, King's Highway, Williamsburg, or Midwood might be worth a visit.

In Williamsburg you might try Gottlieb's (352 Roebling Street). In Midwood, you might try Essex on Coney (1359 Coney Island Avenue), but I would choose Katz's or Second Avenue Deil in Manhattan.

A former classmate of my wife just opened a Smoked Fish and Appetizing shop in Brooklyn: http://www.shelskys.com/. I will get to sample it in September, but expect that Shelsky's should have strong offerings, with both local and Lake Superior fish-smoking pedigrees.
