The tangerines of my youth were a deep, brilliant orange, with slightly thick, shiny but somewhat leathery, nubbly peels that loosely jacketed the juicy but seedy segments within. Sometimes, you would see them labeled "zipper-skin" tangerines by grocers, since they were so easy to peel.

They were usually only available for a few weeks in the winter -- from after Thanksgiving to early January -- and typically figured prominently in holiday fruit bowls and baskets.

Their flavor was bright, potent, a bit tart, a little perfumey. To me, this is what a tangerine is.

I am given to understand that the variety I recall is the 'Dancy' tangerine, a once ubiquitous type now far less common. I miss them desperately. None of the citrus we get now -- 'Honey' and "Sunburst" tangerines, satsuma mandarins and clementines et al -- tastes the same.

Does anyone know where to find Dancy tangerines, locally or by mail order?

They don't seem to sell Dancy, just the hybrid and something called 'Royal Tiara.'

My bad. I think they used to. The honeybell is actually a cross between a Dancy tangerine and a Duncan grapefruit.

There are a couple places that have the fruit by mail order, but I couldn't justify the prices.
