I am looking to find some new sources for small molded chocolates. I use these often for party favors and wee gifts. I love that I can buy chocolate buddhas at BonBon and at Teuscher in the 900 N. Michigan Ave. building I can get little gnomes, horses, vw bugs and airplanes. Up at Piron one can get a variety of circus animals (elephants et al) filled with raspberry cream. I love all of these but am looking to expand my options, if that is, in fact, an option. I am not looking for excellent truffles a la Vosges (I love them too) but rather am looking for wonderful, small molded chocolates. I live in the city but would be willing to drive outside if something was exceptional.

    thanks in advance!

    Hi,

I doubt you will travel just for these, but then again your travels may take you in close proximity. Last Spring, I was in Champaign-Urbana where Adam Stephanides brought us to Ruben's Chocolatier.

You'll find a very nice variety at Fox & Obel, and they have free parking with validation and purchase.

Two old standbys come to mind. The first being Long Grove Confection Company. They have a large selection of molded chocolates and will custom make anything you want in sufficient quantity. The other is The Fudge Pot on Wells. Besides having possibly the best caramel apples in Chicago, they also have quite an assortment of special occasion shapes. Neither of these is the highest quality of chocolate (with Long Grove being of slightly better quality), but they might fit the bill based on your requirements.

Lots of old-fashioned choices (including chocolates shaped like computers) at Old Fashioned Candies in Berwyn. I suspect nothing has changed since Vi wrote this post in 2002.

I just found this out the other day, but they also have doughnuts. And judging by the photo and comments posted on FB by a former co-worker, they are probably quite good. They were really lovely.

Who has doughnuts? Lots of places mentioned.

In the early 80's I used to commute from my home in Lincoln Park to McHenry on a daily basis. A stop at Morkes for a chocolate donut or two was my usual breakfast. As I recall, the donuts were rather thin, well defined "O's" that were somewhat crispy on the outside with a pretty good chocolate frosting.
