Where to find a Bakery for Steamed Chinese Buns a/o Zhong

Post #1 - January 8th, 2006, 2:10 pmPlease PLEASE don't mention Wow Bao on Michigan Ave. I'm looking for an authentic Chinese bakery which makes multiple varieties of steamed Chinese buns, in particular chicken or vegetable buns. Any ideas? I haven't fully explored Chicago Chinatown, but haven't come across any places like this yet. Also, if anyone knows a good source for banana-leaf wrapped glutinous rice w/ "salty" fillings (zhong in Cantonese) that would be excellent. TIA.

Post #2 - January 8th, 2006, 2:14 pmThere is at least one bakery on Argyle street that does the banana leaf with glutinous rice. The same place makes bao, as well as other dim sum type things on Saturdays. God help me, but I can't remember the name of the place, but it's just west of the El. I'm sure that many other people on this board could elaborate on the Argyle street shops.

Post #3 - January 8th, 2006, 3:00 pmThere are several bakeries in Chinatown that have what you want. I would steer you toward Saint Anna Bakery in the Chinatown Square Mall. Call ahead for hours and zhong availability.

Believe it or not, I saw these frozen in the international aisle at Woodman's Market in Kenosha, WI just the other day.

Post #5 - January 8th, 2006, 4:35 pmThanks. Incidentally, we like to visit St. Anna for their egg tarts which are the best in town, done Hong-Kong style w/ the cookie crust vs the ordinarily flaky crust.

Post #7 - August 26th, 2017, 8:44 amSaint Anna (in the mall) is my first choice . . . Chiu Quon (on Wentworth) has some good items but for the most part I much prefer Saint Anna. I wish I could remember the name of a spot in the mall, only to make sure you stay far away . . . just awful.

Thanks! We won't be there for a few hours, so keep me posted if you think of the terrible spot. But if we head to Santa Anna, then at least we'll avoid whichever place it is.

Thanks for the recommendation of Saint Anna. We tried the sesame ball, savory rice ball with pork, custard bun, and the egg custard tart. Everything was delicious!
