What's up with Angel's restaurant in andersonville. Is it still open? No signs of any activity lately.

I hadn't noticed, but I'll be sad if it's gone. I always thought it was an archetypal neighborhood sort of spot. Enjoyed weekend brunch with its mix of trad. American breakfast and interesting Mexican dishes. Great for families and kids. Always very friendly. Look forward to any updates anyone has.

I think they are just on vacation. There's a sign in the window that says they are closed for most of the month and reopening sometime during the last week of January.

On a related note, Ole Ole has their big marquee sign up now ... I hope Angel's can hang in there with such close competition. I'm not a big fan of Angel's food - it's a little too Cisco for me ... but I am a fan of their staff and their patio :D

I hope they stick around as well. I think Ole Ole & Angel's will be different enough to sustain both. Ole Ole looks like it's going to be more upscale/trendy. Angel's is comforty and dineresque. Their patio is awesome, it's child-friendly, and the staff is super-friendly so it's a winner for me. Besides, the neighborhood has how many sushi places? It should be able to sustain a couple of neighboring latin places, right?

We don't think the food at Angel's is anything to get excited about but we love the patio, especially the fruit-bearing pear and apple trees and the exceptionally warm staff who handle toddling people with aplomb. But what really sealed the deal for us was this past Mexican Independence Day when they the entire male waitstaff dressed in drag a la Frida Kahlo with big skirts and braids (and didn't blink or act embarrassed) and they "threw away" the regular menu for rather authentic dishes mostly in the Oaxacan style--and they had a superb Mariachi band! It was one of those magical, kismet moments when we were walking up Clark St. toward Huey's (a hot dog stand) and saw the simple sign on the street proclaiming the evening's festivities and just went for it. I am so glad we did.

The other gossip on the street is that the landlord had threatened to triple their lease and so lots of folks were making sure to get in sunny eves of margaritas because it seemed like if it was true they could shutter as any point. But rental rumours run fast and furious in Andersonville so who knows?

Anyhow, one last thing, I actually think they do a really rather stand-up Mexican breakfast.

cheers to Angel's to not being perfect or even great but still being a good spot to go to.

Just visited Angel's for dinner tonight. The food was fine...when we finally got it. Service was pleasant enough, but so severly short staffed that literally every table within earshot on the moderately crowded patio was talking about it. Multiple tables left before receiving the check, mine included--yes everyone did calculate the total and leave the appropriate amount. After waiting another 20 minutes after asking for the bill, and sitting at the restaurant nearly 2 hours, it was time to go. I've never, ever experienced such a wait as I did there tonight. 45 minutes just to get a bowl of chips and just about an hour for the dinner. I'd love to go again, as the patio is quite nice and I enjoyed my meal, but I'm hesitant to because of the service. Please reassure me it was a fluke!

I've never been there for dinner, only weekend breakfast, but always had pleasant and prompt enough service, incl. busing and coffee refills. Sounds like someone called in sick, or a scheduling miscalculation, but you never know. Let's hope it was a fluke. I like them.
