I know...I'm not sure my subject header is even pun-worthy ;)

Yeah...I know Cub beat them to it...there was that mini-thread awhile back.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a concommittant "infotainment/ad" glut regarding the installation. I assume that's just a week or so away.

I'm not afeared of the technology myself. I simply think they're rushing things, shoving too much machinery into the market too fast.

You know how confounding some people find the self-checkout.

The cashier at the Cub by me spend the whole time I checked out my last visit trying very hard to convince me to sign up for that service. I didn't at the time but at my next visit they were all 'down for the day'. The technology is interesting but somehow the whole idea makes me feel nervous. I have no idea why.

Biometric identification is the ultimate password. With anything card-based you can't be sure the user is always the same person, if that matters. Makes it hard to send Junior down to the store with your Visa, though. All this makes me wonder: how good is the technology of artificial fingerprints? We'll find out soon enough.

If you use cash or credit cards to pay for things, and somebody steals your wallet, that's annoying and inconvenient. The prospect of what bad guys might do to get hold of your fingers, on the other hand....

But maybe I read too much science fiction.

The question isn't how good are artificial fingerprints, but how good are fingerprint-based biometric systems at detecting fakies? The answer: not very.
