The Palm in Northbrook Court is part of a chain of steakhouses based on the principal of wretched excess. For those who want to indulge at (relatively) low prices, they have a special they call a family style dinner.

For $59.00 a party of two or three gets:

--Half & half (cottages fries + fried onions)
--Soup or salad for each person
--choice of 16 oz. filet mignon or 18 oz Prime NY strip
--choice of another entree from a list of nine options
--choice of two side dishes from a list of six options
--choice of one dessert from a choice of three options

Beverages are additional. Wine by the glass is from $7.50 to $14.00.

All servings are large and even a group of three is likely to be taking leftovers home (we did).

The restaurant has been described already by JimInLoganSquare at http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=5910&highlight=palm+northbrook

His description is pretty much on target, so we avoided the lobster bisque. Otherwise, food quality and service are generally pretty good. The check was presented promptly and they did not push the frequent diner's club.

I wasn't kidding when I said servings are large. The sides all fill hefty dinner plates. The fries overflowed the plate. (I actually preferred the cottage fries and fried onions). My wife's shrimp saute was very tasty and there was enough left over for it to be her lunch today. My son and I split the strip steak, and we all shared the chocolate layer cake. A "slice" was nearly a quarter of a large layer cake. It was moist and very chocolaty. The leftover portion will be a full dessert for the three of us again tonight. A plate of large mushroom caps (about 8 or 9) was perfectly OK, but not memorable.

You can see the details of the family style dinner at: http://www.thepalm.com/index.cfm?fa=p&pid=173

Note: This is only available Sunday thru Thursday evenings, and only at the Northbrook Palm. Others in the chain do not offer this option.

As I said at the beginning, when you feel like indulging this is a relatively low cost option.

    Enjoy (burp!).

Thanks for the heads up! My only question is - is this limited to 3 people? When I look at that list of food, I know there's no way that I'd be able to finish it all, even if I had two helpers. Looking at the site, its unclear whether 2-3 is a guideline, or the limit.

Since they're including soup/salad for every person, I'd imagine it's a hard limit of 3.

I really don't know if it's a hard limit. With a group of 4 I'd just have the 4th person order an appetizer or a relatively light entree such as fish or pasta. Should work.

You'll probably still have leftovers. Even with three of us, we sure did. The shrimp was my wife's lunch and the side dishes + cake filled out our dinner the next day.

If you have questions, call the restaurant.
