Omaje a Don Gary, El Huiviot
Homage to G Wiv (and Rahsaan)

As we were finishing preparing dinner and setting the table, I realised that there was something very Wiviotish about our meal: cevapcici from Ilidzanka and green chile sauce from El Yucateco. Otherwise, con-fusion reigned: acini di pepe dressed in parsley and myzithra, a 'pisto' of onion, garlic, tomato and zucchini with fresh mint and cinnamon... Oh yes, also some Turkish (Ömür) yogurt and bread from Masi's...

A very tasty meal... Many thanks to G Wiv for telling me of the cevapcici of Ilidzanka. A wonderful little place on old Al Aurans.

Also noteworthy was Lucantonius' introduction to and most enthusiastic reception of Rahsaan Roland Kirk and the Vibration Society's outstanding record Rahsaan Rahsaan (yes, 'record'; I dug out some old disks tonight). Lucantonius performed a spirited and impressive interpretive dance of the tale of old Tongue Snatcher, as related in the preamble and lyrics to the song 'Baby Let Me Shake Your Tree'.

I don't care how many squirrels got their nuts out of the tree...

I miss Rahsaan. Now Lucantonius does too.

    Antonius,

Thank you for introducing me to Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Thanks to the wonders of the internet and MusicMatch I've been listening to a number of cuts, though unfortunately they don't have 'Baby let me shake your tree' in the database.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

    Gary,

It sounds as though you like what you've heard of Rahsaan so far. An amazing musician and a very funny fellow -- his little 'raps' between songs were usually hilarious while also being socially and politically charged. As a player, he took the old gimmick of playing multiple instruments at once to a new level, actually doing really interesting things in that manner. In 'Baby Let Me Shake Your Tree', he plays a very nifty little solo with flute and nose-flute and then nose-flute and harmonica. Alas, he died far too young, in his early 40's. I got to meet him once in New York and cherish the memory.

His music goes very well with cevapcici, as well as with most other things.

With regard to cevapcici, I think my next 'fusional' treatment of them will be a New Mexican version with fresh green (Hatch) chiles and lepina, Dios mediante. Of course, a bottle of El Yucateco will also be available.

I shouldn't have had that thought so early in the work day... Mmm, green chile cevapcici... green chile jamburguesas...
