Shirako would be milt, right? I've asked at a few places, including Katsu but haven't come across it. Of course, I haven't searched hard or asked, so I'd be curious as well - though I didn't particularly care for it the one time I tried it (not in Chicago).

I had it once only too... in new york, i forgot what the name of the japanese place was, its in mid-town however and i believe its closed now because the owner went back to japan when he found out he has cancer.

It was a special on the menu and my sister ordered it and we did not know what it was. Its very creamy tasting and somewhat like sweetbread.. and it was very very good.

I tried looking for it online to see if any fish market or store will sell it but no luck.

    Hopefully someone will know.

It is somewhat awkward to call around and ask if they serve the soft roe... knowing what that is....

Codfish roe is available to Athens Grocery Inc, at 324 S. Halsted, and probably at other Greek grocery stores. At Athens Grocery you can buy either plain confish roe or taramosalata of which confish roe is the main ingredient.

Jane, 'roe' is more of an euphemism. You are talking about actual cod roe (such as discussed in this recent thread
Shirako is milt. As the OP mentions it is creamy and IIRC disturblingly so.

I've seen it sold in giant frozen blocks (codfish milt) the size of small telephone books at Chicago Food Corp (a Korean market).

Sounds like the chicago food corp one is what i am looking for. I can think of just grilling them or putting them in chawan mushi or perhaps in a hot pot, any other suggestions anyone can think of or have seen it in?
