    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone's tried Mario's butcher shop on Madison near Central. We live just a few blocks away, so I've always been meaning to stop in, but I've found things in the Austin neighborhood to either be great finds or awful dives (no real middle ground). I'd love to find out more about this place prior to checking it out.

BTW--saw the posts about Blue Ribbon on Austin on the Oak Park/Austin border, and we have purchased some of the best pork ribs I've ever cooked there. Russ is super-friendly and can order whatever you want.

    Thanks for any info,
    Anna

I've been to Mario's a few times within the last year. The only item I've purchased from Mario's has been pork shoulders. Every time Mario's had the size (10-12 lb) of shoulders I was looking for, and the meat was acceptable. Pork shoulders seem to be pork shoulders, I've never had a great one, only bad ones & regular ones, and these weren't bad.

What made me visit Mario's was that the people I know from the area that swear by Mario's.

Overall I can say that the store was neat, orderly, and otherwise in the middle ground.
