Post #1 - February 12th, 2006, 10:05 amSam's Club has some wonderful Danish Havarti cheese. They carry plain or dill versions. It is creamy and mild and delicious.
Walgreen's is selling two good-sized round tins of Danish butter cookies (Royal Dansk brand) for $5. Nice Valentine's Day gifts for teachers, neighbors or relatives.
Can anyone suggest other Danish products they have come across? --Joy

And, although this is probably not what you are looking for, it may be worth mentioning that they actually make a pretty good Danish pastry at Panera, that is, if you can overlook the glaze. (Talk about gilding the lily.) Anyway, I've found them to approximate the one's at Lund's in Minneapolis in texture and freshness. I'd look in Andersonville as well, since Wikstrom's and others tend to carry Norwegian, Finnish, and Danish products as well as Swedish ones. Please post if you find a restaurant that serves smorrebrod.Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.

Post #3 - February 12th, 2006, 6:04 pmI'd never previously noticed the nice selection of butter at Marketplace on Oakton, but they had Lurpak on sale today: $2.99/half pound. I saw the manager, but wasn't sure how to tactfully ask if there was any reponse to current events embedded in the sale. Anyway, I bought some.Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.

Post #6 - February 21st, 2006, 5:26 pmRacine Wisconsin is home to a Danish community and is the Kringle Kapitol of the world. IMHO, the Kringle from O&H bakery is the best. I am not a big pastry fan, but once I start eating it, I can't stop. I like the original almond flavor the best.
Besides O&H bakery, there is also Larsen's, Lehman's and Bendsten's bakeries, as well as a couple of Danish specialty shops. Definitely worth the 1 hour drive, but pack lots of insulin and cholesterol pills because everthing is made with lots of butter and sugar.

Post #8 - March 1st, 2006, 6:34 pmWikstrom's Deli on Clark and Berwyn in the Andersonville neighborhood carries a variety of Danish products as well as other Scandinavian products. Great cheese selection if you are planning a smorgasbord. In the instance they don't have what you are looking for- I'm sure they'd be happy to help you find it- great Mom and Pop owned business

O&H Bakery, Racine
Aah, d4v3, Aalborg Akvavit is one of my favourites of the genre and a fine way to cap off a meal of Medisterpølse from Racine's own O&H Bakery...
O&H's medisterpølse are very nicely spiced, in a fashion related to but distinct from that of their better known German analogues.
When we've been to O&H, we've been in the middle of nice-weather day outings to Kenosha and Racine, so we've just bought the sausages in packs from the freezer, which we stick in a cooler where they are happy to 'chill' until whenever it is we get back to Chicago. To be honest, I don't know if they regularly sell the sausages fresh — I would guess they do, when they make a batch of them — and I'd certainly like to get them in that state some time, but the frozen ones are darn good...
There are four O&H locations but we've only been to the large one on Durand (address below) — the other locations can be found on the O&H website (N.B., for some reason, I can't find mention of the sausages on the website).
Medisterpølse, with a simple potato accompaniment, maybe some cabbage preparation on the side as well, some good mustard, dark bread, a cold beer, and an ice-cold shot of snaps... det kan jeg godt lide...
I just noticed the last post in this thread was almost exactly six years ago... My, how time flies...
