I have an invitation to eat at H & A Restarant this weekend and couldn't find any posts here regarding the place. Any thoughts, recommendations, or data points I should be aware of? Thanks.

    JiLS,

I've never been there, but I've heard the Reader is going to be covering it in the next few weeks.

    You forgot the ampersands!

Revising my search (removing the spaces around the ampersand), I found this link from ReneG. Any other SUBSTANTIVE comments or suggestions???

I like H&A quite a bit. I mentioned it here a few weeks ago. This thread contains several mentions of the place (read the whole thread). And here’s an old Chowhound post on H&A. I was going to mention H&A (and Edna’s—World’s Best Biscuits and Barbara’s Soul Food and Jackie’s Hot Biscuits . . .) when you were discussing the lack of biscuits in Chicago. As I recall H&A’s biscuits aren’t bad at all but they’re overshadowed by their dinner rolls.

I second ReneG's suggestion of Dinner Rolls.

Been to H&A a couple of times, usually to take out. Its like the more famous
Macarthurs, but may be better. The meat-and-two kind of place IMHO, at
least thats what Ive gotten. May be a touch more expensive than Mac,
a buck or so more, but the food comes with soup-of-the-day (wqhich is
usally pretty good), and dinner rolls (or corn muffins, but the dinner rolls
    are very good).

If you like soul food you'll be pretty happy with whats on offer. They have
cafeteria style fiend chicken etc, but I dont usualy get it - good fried
chicken spots around here anyway. However the smothered stuff
is pretty good, decent gravy et al. Mac-n-cheese was very good the
cpouple times I had it too, much better than Macarthurs (which is
quite famous). The dinner rolls are excellent. I believe the desserts
are good, but cant quite recall haveing tried it (instead stopped at
Mrs Lee's Good Food on 55th and picked up dessert, its excellent
    there).

I think you'll enjoy your trip to H&A, if youre a fan of soul food at all.
And after youre done, make sure to drive up Cottage Grove (H&A is
only a short way off Cottage Grove, maybe half a mile), to 76th
street and pick up Barbara Ann's hot links to go :-)

Some really bad news: H&A has closed after over 60 years. Even with the note about reopening, I’d say it doesn’t look good.

More bad news on the biscuit front: Jackie’s Place (425 E 71st) has also closed.
