Hi there - I am moving to Chicago from overseas in August. I am a celiac and am wondering whether there are places that cater for this in Chicago, esp. around Hyde Park? Also are there any fresh produce markets around Hyde Park?

    Many thanks,
    Jess

    HI,

Welcome back to the USA and Chicago.

I did a quick google to learn Celiac is a gluten intolerance disease. While we are a Chicagoland restaurant review and food sourcing forum, I have to wonder if there are forums specific to your issues. I noticed on site I linked to there is a message board, which might be of use to you or perhaps advise of a forum specific to your needs.

Meanwhile if someone here is experiencing the same issue, they will very likely advise what they know.

there are places that cater for this in Chicago, esp. around Hyde Park?

Are you seeking restaurants or food shops who are sensitive to this issue?

    Regards,
    Cathy2

My cousin also has this condition. He buys a lot of stuff at a gluten-free store in Buffalo Grove. Unfortunately, that is pretty far from Hyde Park.

Here is a very good website done by a local woman that has a list of Chicago restaurants (and elsewhere) that will accommodate gluten-free diets.

There was recently an article (in the Tribune this past Thursday) on Chicago restaurants being more friendly to the needs of celiac folks like they are to people with food allergies. They mentioned an owner whose kid has celiac.

I was just at Whole Foods on Clyborn at North and they had a big sign in the window "check out our Gluten-free baked goods!"

mentions Wildfire, Vinci, Adobo Grill, River Grove's Da Luciano as well as chains Outback Steakhouse, PF Chang, Carrabba's Italian Grill and Mitchell's Fish Market and U Chicago's Celiac web site http://www.celiacdisease.net

I had an additional thought. The University of Chicago (in Hyde Park) has a Celiac Disease program. I am sure they know of local gluten-free resources near the university.

    Hey Jess,
I have Celiac Disease and have lived in the city and the suburbs. There are plenty of places to get GF food and there are a few restaurants that have GF menus.

I'm in the middle of cleaning, but I'll respond later this evening with more information.

    Welcome to Chicago!

Long time lurker, first-time poster here.

Hyde Park Produce is a perfectly nice produce market in Hyde Park. The guacamole at the deli counter is great, and the prices are pretty reasonable. Certainly a big step above the Hyde Park Co-op, which is the local grocery store. They've got gnarly produce at complete rip-off prices.

Hi Jess. My daughter is allergic to wheat -- not the same as celiac disease, I know, but close enough so that I know some resources. The Gluten-Free Market in Buffalo Grove is wonderful and you can order their products online, so you don't have to schlep out to the suburbs. Whole Foods does carry a lot of gluten-free products as well. They are located all over the city, but not yet in Hyde Park. Good luck to you.
