Does anyone have any suggestions for dinner this Saturday for my boyfriend and I within a mile or two of The Vic, 3145 N. Sheffield Ave.? I am open to any type of cuisine, the price range should not go past moderately expensive.

    Thanks for your help!

I'm a big fan of the Pick Me Up, which is right at Clark and Sheffield. Nothing super fancy, but entirely decent and open late. (And the crowd is generally pretty fun.)

thanks for suggestion, we are actually looking for something that would be a little more upscale than that...

Here's a few places I like in that neighborhood, in no particular order:

    Jack's on Halsted - contemporary
    3201 N. Halsted

Mama Desta's Red Sea - I believe this is the oldest Ethiopian place in the city
    3218 N. Clark

Menagerie - similar to Jack's, maybe a little more conventional
    1232 W. Belmont

Yoshi's Cafe - also contemporary; formerly one of the city's best fine-dining spots; Yoshi decided to go casual a number of years ago
    3257 N. Halsted

Matsu Yama - good sushi, beware of the concentration of Trixies
    1059 W. Belmont

I like X/O, although a number of others here do not.

Twist is a fun spot with both traditional and non/traditional tapas.

Socca is a pretty decent neighborhood bistro.

A bit further away is Sappori, which is very good for Italian (again, not the most authentic, but very good food and a pretty reasonable prices given the area).

    X/O
    3441 N. Halsted St.

    Twist
    3412 N. Sheffield Ave.

    Socca
    3301 N. Clark St.

    Sappori
    2701 N. Halsted St.

The question is one of timing. There aren't many good upscale places open after an 8pm show. I'd suggest Erwin, which I think would probably be perfect for you, except it closes at 10:30 on Saturdays.

Are there specific reasons for not going for dinner beforehand, and maybe getting a drink after?

For quality Vietnamese food, you could try Vien Dong. They're open until 11 pm on weekends.

I'll second Menagerie- surprisingly good little joint. I went last year with some friends, had a very pleasant time, good food and good service.

I'll third the Menagerie suggestion. Consistently great, overlooked little neighborhood bistro. Not sure how late they stay open.

Socca is really good too. I think they serve their full menu until 11 and then they have a late menu that runs until 1 a.m. or so.

Going to see Stereolab at the Vic? My wife and I will be there. Can't wait.

I'm not sure if this is out of your radius or not, but Volo might be a nice choice. I believe they are open pretty late.

Ah, totally forgot about Volo. I would highly recommend expanding your radius if at all possible. Order the bone marrow...you won't be disappointed.

Erwin's gets most everything right, and is comfortably upscale without being stuffy. Blue jeans to coat and tie are acceptable and work equally well.

It's one of my go-to places in the neighborhood for quiet, peaceful, (usually) delicious dining.

The crowd tends to be a little more mature than at some of the other Lakeview hotspots mentioned.

Give Kaze a try. Great sushi and Japanese food in a hip but not pretentious setting.

It's in Roscoe village which is fairly close and might be open later than other options.

I can only assume that grant is referring to the White Castle at the corner of Addison, Kedzie, & Elston. About 2.5mi west of Wrigley.

Count me among those who has been repeatedly underwhelmed by Erwin. But each time I go to Socca and Yoshi I remember how much I like both places, and wonder why I don't eat there more often.

That is not even funny.

cuteheart, you could try Pat's Pizzeria & Ristorante. It's right around the corner at 3114 N Sheffield Ave. Maybe not "upscale", but not a dive either.

If you're up for a drink afterward, try Pop's for Champagne at 2934 N Sheffield Ave. (Their website states "The current location will continue to operate through the end of April, 2006" when they will move to State and Ohio.)

You are not alone, my friend.
Mrs. johnny and I ate there for the first (and likely last) time about a month ago. While nothing was particularly bad enough to warrant a long-winded rant/review on this board, I was severely underwhelmed. I've had much better food, service and ambiance for less money.

    Pat's moved to 2679 N. Lincoln Ave.
That stretch of Sheffield Ave. is currently becoming condo-fied and is under construction.

You could also check out Star Bar, which is next to Pops. They've got a small menu for noshing...cheese plates, pizzas, etc. It's just down the street from the Vic and it'll definitely be open after your show.
