Mythbusters did an episode on chilling beer. The 'myth' was that Vietnam soldiers would chill beer through evaporative cooling by burying a sixer in the sand and pouring a quart of gas over it and lighting it. Didn't work.
The tried a lot of esoteric options, including pouring warm beer through refrigerated coils and plunging a liquid-nitrogen-cooled rod into a stein (lots of foam, not enough cooling), and found the best results were found with a CO2 fire extinguisher, or with an ice-water-salt mixture, which in five minutes cooled a six-pack down to 34F (without the salt, it only got down to about 40 in five minutes, IIRC).
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?
