The best corned beef I've tasted in Chicago is Manny's Deli, Jefferson and Roosevelt. However they close at 4pm and they don't serve beer.

So where should I and my lady go?

North Side, South Side - doesn't matter. It has to be fun!!

    Thanks.

We concur with Cathy2's rec of Celtic Knot in Evanston. If corned beef and cabbage can ever be gourmet, this is it. It is the same dish that you know and love raised to a level that you never imagined.

They also have some excellent other dishes like lamb stew. The fish part of their fish-n-chips is wonderful, big puffy batter-dipped and fried, crunchy and light. The chips are standard boring french fries that I think really do a disservice to the combo.

The portions are not large but you will never be dissappointed with the quality.

The entire kitchen seems a cut above "pub" or "Irish" food. Try ANY dessert -- all homemade. Try any bread pudding-style dish. All are the kind of thing that you take one bite and realize that you have never tasted bread pudding before.

Manny's is definitely good, but I've gotta tell you, AP Deli gives you double the corned beef that Manny's and at about 6-7 bucks. There are a few around the city at last check. Please try for yourselves

A full pound of corned beef on a sandwich? Has AP recently morphed into the Carnegie Deli?

Well, Manny's (Gino, really, since he probably makes 99% of the CB sandwiches there), puts 8oz of CB on each sandwich. If AP really uses twice that, or even close to twice that, it'd be an incredibly unwieldy sandwich. Manny's already comes close to too high of a meat to breadstuff ratio, I'd imagine AP goes well beyond.

Let's not confuse quantity with quality. A double quarter pounder with cheese is more meat than a Paradise Pup cheddar burger. That doesn't make it a better burger.

I haven't been to the actual deli (I think there are 5 locations), but I gotta tell someone about their corned beef sandwich. I bought one from a truck in front of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield building at lunchtime. The quality of the corned beef is astounding, surpassing any and every corned beef sandwich I have ever eaten (including the Carnegie Deli's in NYC). The bread is not quite rye, and the mustard is yellow, not brown, but the sandwich is packed full and the meat is lean, incredibly flavorful, and warm. I've lived in Chicago over 20 years, and I don't know how I've not heard of this place.

    No kidding!!

Last time I ate at A.P. Deli, Wabash Ave location, I was so disheartened by the sandwich after two bites I tossed it and went to Manny's. In this, admittedly old, c-h post I equate A.P.'s corned beef to Hormel.

    Enjoy,

Another south-side, two-letter-name, big-portions place is D.A.’s Deli (2926 W Columbus Av; about 7700 S). I didn’t think their corned beef sandwich was terribly special but I preferred it to AP’s and have to admit the price:mass ratio was impressive. They also have a small soul food menu (changes daily) that I’ve been meaning to try.

    Thanks!

Have you tried calling a Whole Foods? I would be surprised if their prepared foods didn't offer it.

Probably late, but the Whole Foods in Lincoln Park did have corned beef, cabbage, bangers and mash and other Irish dishes on their hot bar this evening.
